Wide of briefing\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bush administration announced on Wednesday that it would not launch unfair trade investigations into China's currency practices and alleged violations of labour rights.\u003cbr/\u003eFour top members of the administration's economic team made the announcement, saying that the US government was not planning to threaten to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese imports into the United States in order to get China to change its trade practices.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the team said the US administration wanted to work with the Chinese in letting the domestic market set prices and currency rates, and work with the Chinese labour department in setting new standards for worker protection.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganised labour in the US had sought the imposition of tariffs of as much as 77 percent on Chinese products on the grounds that China was brutally repressing worker rights.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the administration had taken the case and had begun a formal investigation, it could have led to an imposition of tariffs on Chinese products to compensate American companies for China's labour practices.\u003cbr/\u003eThe administration also announced that it would not look favourably on a case that American manufacturers have considered filing against China's currency policy. \u003cbr/\u003eUS manufacturers contend that China's practice of linking its currency to the dollar has undervalued the Chinese currency by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese manufacturers a huge competitive advantage against US
