The W-H-O is also investigating a possible second...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organization has confirmed  the deadly Ebola virus is to blame for  scores of deaths in central Zaire, as an aid group said the death toll has reached 170. \u003cbr/\u003eThe W-H-O is also investigating a possible second outbreak of the\u003cbr/\u003edisease in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthor Richard Preston whose novel \"The Hot Zone\" details an outbreak of Ebola in the  United States has spoken to APTV of his fears of a global spread of the killer virus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe novel The Hot Zone has been made into a multi million dollar Hollywood movie  starring Dustin Hoffman.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his book the author Richard Preston describes how an imported virus from Africa  wreaks havoc in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003ePreston says the virus is every bit as terrible as AIDS, if not worse.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Ebola virus is a particularly nasty and fast acting virus. Some of the strains kill nine out  of ten people they infect and there's no known cure or even any treatment for it. Ebola is  classified as level 4, bio-hazard level 4, which is the highest level of danger and when  you die of Ebola virus basically what you have amounts to a biological melt down. It  takes about ten to fourteen days and in then you go through this final phase known as  the \"crash and bleed out\" when you go into shock and then you can lose all of the  blood  in your body. It simply comes running out of all the orifices of the body. It's a  particularly horrifying death.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Richard Preston, author \"The Hot Zone\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe outbreak at the moment is in the city of Kikwit in Zaire where the entire population  of 600-thousand are in quarantine.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever there was a similar scare some years ago in the U-S when some laboratory  monkeys infected with the Ebola virus escaped from Reston laboratory in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1989 600 monkeys imported from the Philippines were injected with the virus. They  escaped from their cages and the U-S army had to be called in to put them down and  sterilise the place.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has since been closed down and is now up for sale. But Preston says the scare at  the time was very real.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well the Ebola-Reston crisis was very scary at the time it happened. This was a large  group of monkeys infected with the Ebola virus who were being used for scientific  research and somehow they got Ebola and began to die. And there was huge concern  in the United Sates the virus was going to jump species, get out of the monkeys and  into the human population of Washington. So the United States army got involved and  moved in on that building with troops and they were wearing space suits. They went  inside the building wearing this full bio-hazard gear and sterilised it and meanwhile there  was real concern the virus was going to get out of the building.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Richard Preston, author \"The Hot Zone\"\u003cbr/\u003eScientist are working on a cure for Ebola and other viruses, but like AIDS there is as  yet no vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003ePreston says the modern world lacks the necessary barriers to prevent a wide scale  outbreak of such viruses.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, at the present time in the late twentieth century we're having a kind of biological  crisis in the human species. It's not just the Ebola virus, but it's AIDS and other  emerging infectious threats. Organisms that are new and changing and mutating and  are showing signs of ability to sweep through the human species and do terrible  damage. What we've seen on a global basis is a kind of global breakdown of the public  health system.
