Back, back to Islam, back, back to the Koran!\".\u003cbr/\u003eCulture Minister Farouk Hosni has been under fire for allowing the publication of the novel \"Banquet for Seaweed\" by the renowned Syrian writer Haider.\u003cbr/\u003eThe novel's plot centres on two leftist Iraqi intellectuals who fled the injustice of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in the late 1970s. \u003cbr/\u003eThe characters blame political oppression in the Arab world on dictatorships and conservative movements.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week, Islamic fundamentalists in Egypt launched a campaign against the book, claiming it contained insults to God and the prophet Mohammed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Al-Azhar students took up the campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eUniversity president Omar Ahmed Hashem failed to calm them with assurances the government does not allow any insults to religion.\u003cbr/\u003eCulture ministry officials say Haider's book, first published in Beirut in 1983, is one of the best Arabic novels of the 20th century. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said the ministry reprinted it in November according to artistic and literary criteria as part of a project to publish celebrated Arabic novels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe culture minister last week appointed a committee of university professors and critics to assess the complaints against Haider's book. \u003cbr/\u003eMany books have been banned in recent years after conservative Egyptians complained that they contained anti-Islamic material.\u003cbr/\u003eSecular writers accused the fundamentalists of taking phrases from the novel out of context to twist meanings.\u003cbr/\u003eIslamic fundamentalists have been barred from politics in Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eA violent anti-government Muslim militant movement that began in 1992 has largely faded after a government crackdown that has included military trials for accused fundamentalists.\u003cbr/\u003e Cairo, Egypt - May 8, 2000   XFA\u003cbr/\u003e1.
