Well that image has been altered somewhat thanks to a project to introduce camels to...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSwahili/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThink of the Masai people of northern Kenya and you're likely to conjure up an image of tall, red-cloaked tribesmen tending a herd of cattle. \u003cbr/\u003eWell that image has been altered somewhat thanks to a project to introduce camels to the Masai desert environment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Masai people took some convincing but now camels are becoming a small, but integral, part of their farming lifestyle. \u003cbr/\u003eCattle were once the only animals worshipped and owned by the Masai tribe.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now camels, seen before as useful only in the desert, are beginning to cause a stir in the predominately Masai Kajiado district southeast of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers had many prejudices against camels. \u003cbr/\u003eMost felt they drank too much water, ate too much grass and spread diseases that could kill their beloved cattle.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1986, the government decided to introduce camels into the semi-arid district after severe drought, and the outbreak of East Coast fever took a toll on the cattle population and caused severe economic hardship.\u003cbr/\u003eThe camel project, financed through a grant from the Netherlands, was launched to boost and improve food security.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first 293 camels from the Wahir district in northern Kenya were put on sale at a heavily subsidised rate of 1,500 shillings.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there were few takers.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite efforts by project leaders to change the Masai mindset, the scepticism persisted.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was another drought in 1996 that finally led to a breakthrough.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the Masai villagers saw their cattle emaciated but the camels looking fine and providing milk, they began appreciating the animal.               \u003cbr/\u003eRetired school teacher, Joyce Kores decided to buy four camels even though her husband banned them from mingling with his cattle.    \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I've decided to add on my family because I've been having cows and goats. But now I've added another herd of camels because I've seen that they are good animals for us. They give us milk and they are not hard to farm like cows because they don't drink a lot of water like cows. They also don't bring soil erosion.
