them up.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the Olympics less than two months away, activists claim that the preparations for the games have involved destruction of the environment and a way of life.\u003cbr/\u003eIn retaliation, the authorities are detaining and putting activists on trial.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a new saying, that you speak about Sochi like you would about a dead man, nothing but good,\" said local journalist Svetlana Kravchenko, who has spent years documenting environmental abuses in Sochi and the heavy-handed tactics of local officials.\u003cbr/\u003eShe works as a reporter for Caucasian Knot, a major Russian web publication that covers the region. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said that when she visited a water company to demand answers about a supply cut in Sochi, she suddenly found herself surrounded by security guards.\u003cbr/\u003eThe veteran reporter pushed her way out of the office and into the street, as the guards clutched at her clothes and tore off a sleeve.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next day, Kravchenko was charged with beating up one of the guards, but she said an examination revealed nothing more than a small scratch on his ear. \u003cbr/\u003eSix months later Kravchenko was found guilty and fined 10,000 rubles (300 US dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eKravchenko said the episode was merely a pretext for authorities to \"take revenge against a difficult journalist\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe water company and Sochi judicial authorities did not return requests for comment.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental activist Dmitri Shevchenko, who has reported extensively on the environmental damage in Sochi, also has a tale to tell of harassment.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was held at the airport in the regional capital of Krasnodar for four hours last month after he flew in from a business trip.\u003cbr/\u003eFirst, he was searched by Federal Security Services officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThen he was taken to a police station where officers would not let him go or explain why they had to hold him.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Policemen were holding me inside police station. Although several times I asked 'Am I detained?' No. 'Did I trespass?' No. 'May I go home?'
