But not many schools recognise A-S-L as a language.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Martin Florsheim, Principal, Junior High School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (JHS 47)\u003cbr/\u003eMany schools designed to teach deaf students in the U-S recognize sign language as a mode of communication but not as a true language.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd while it's been used in the U-S for around 180 years, A-S-L remains controversial.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is still a great deal of support in mainstream education for what some call  \"oralism,\" or encouraging deaf children to try to speak out loud.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut Doctor Oscar Cohen, superintendent at the Lexington School for the Deaf, disagrees.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that coaxing a deaf child to solely be an oral child is depriving that child of the use of all of their abilities.\u003cbr/\u003eCohen  believes such an approach promotes the exclusive use of speaking and lip reading at the expense of signing.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think it needs to be oralism versus sign language and I think that's where people make a big mistake.
