VS of film shoot \u003cbr/\u003ePedro is an unlikely hero of Colombia's newest hit TV show - an unreformed ladies man who dresses like a dork, is a compulsive liar and gets tangled up in his own schemes.\u003cbr/\u003e'Pedro el Escamoso,' part soap opera and part sitcom, is not about the rich and the beautiful. On the contrary, it's about a fashion-challenged goof-up from a lower-middle class neighborhood. And therein lies its appeal. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We all know a Pedro Escamoso,\" says Alicia Vargas, a hair dresser who tunes in the show in the Bogota salon where she works. \"My clients all watch him and we talk about people we know who are like that, really like that.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe show has captured a devoted following not only in Colombia - it is being broadcast in other Latin American countries, and is now also watched in the United States on the Spanish-language Telemundo network.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no one-word translation for \"escamoso.\" But ask any Colombian what the slang term means, and they'll deliver a quick definition: A guy who thinks he's the best looking, the best dancer, the most knowledgeable in everything from investments to fixing cars, but who fouls everything up time and again. A schemer who becomes the victim of his own plots. In short, a loser who thinks he's a winner.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one, of course, admits that they themselves are like that. \u003cbr/\u003eThe award-winning show comes on the heels of another Colombian hit program - 'Betty la Fea' (Spanish for Betty the Ugly) which broke the mold by featuring a star who was not a raging beauty.\u003cbr/\u003ePedro, in some ways, is the male version of Betty. An anti-hero. In his heart, he's a good guy, he just goes about things wrong, with women often bailing him out.\u003cbr/\u003eThe show has begun to break the Latin American soap opera mold, with a hero who isn't rich, who doesn't rule the world and who makes a fool of himself, according to sociologist Florence Thomas, a professor at Bogota's National University. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It seems the Colombian society is demanding a different view of the relations between men and women, with a man who is more vulnerable and women who have to lead him around,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eTrouble with women forced Pedro to flee his rural village for the big city. Though this new world is foreign to him, he continues blithely on, convinced he knows everything: about women, parties, dancing, business. His misconceptions constantly get him into trouble.  Women are attracted by Pedro's beefy good looks and country-boy innocence, even though he wears polyester pants hemmed a couple inches short of fashionable, with cowboy boots poking out underneath. Topping it all off is his redneck \"mullet\" haircut - long at the back and short in front.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He's so real and so ridiculous,\" says Jinette Melendez, a faithful viewer in Bogota. \"It's the only show my mother, my father, and I all watch.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFilling out the cast are other stereotypes, including the small-time corrupt guy and the pretty love interest. \"This is us. This is Latin America,\" declares actor Jairo Camaro, who plays the corrupt character, Alirio Perfan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe show has made actor Miguel Varoni, who plays Pedro, into one of the most recognized faces in Colombia.  \"Pedro has changed my life,\" Varoni said in the studio recently as a stylist applied a hair piece. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring carnival season this year, Pedro cowboy hats, complete with long, black, curly hair pieces, were among the most popular costumes in Colombia. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fame is spreading abroad. There's a photo of Pedro in the New York subway. The show has spawned dance competitions in Colombia, Houston and Washington, where contestants imitate Pedro's exaggerated dance movements. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen Varoni vacationed in New York recently, people stopped him on the street to ask for autographs. \"This was always the dream,\" said Varoni, with just a touch of Pedro narcissism. \"The dream of anyone who is involved in television is to be
