Corpses in warehouse\u003cbr/\u003eThere's evidence that some major earthquakes deep below the Pacific Ocean are signaling their arrival before they happen.  \u003cbr/\u003eA team of U-S scientists have released new data showing how some quakes along a set of fault lines emit what they call foreshocks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers say those foreshocks can be used to forecast the main tremor.\u003cbr/\u003eThey believe it's a step toward predicting large quakes in the hours before they happen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe devastating earthquake that triggered tsunami waves last December 26 came without warning. \u003cbr/\u003eThe quake measured more than nine-point-zero in magnitude, and the massive waves it generated left a path of destruction and more than 173-thousand people dead in 11 nations across the Indian Ocean region.\u003cbr/\u003eReliable forecasting of major earthquakes has been an elusive goal for seismologists. \u003cbr/\u003eNow researchers in the U-S are reporting evidence of early indicators, called foreshocks, along some active quake regions of the Pacific Ocean. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers defined a foreshock as any tremor of at least two-point-five magnitude on the Richter scale. \u003cbr/\u003eEarthquakes are tremors of no less than five-point-four magnitude.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing this standard, the research team were able to declare a hypothetical alarm, or early warning, for some of the major quakes that have occurred in the region from 1996 to 2001. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd they say it's the first demonstration that some types of large quakes may be predictable on time scales of hours or less.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"In the oceans on the particular types of faults that we've been looking at, there is more foreshock activity and it has certain characteristic patterns that allow us to predict when large shocks might occur.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Thomas Jordan, Director, Southern California Earthquake Center. \u003cbr/\u003eThe finding suggests that short-term prediction, the ability to forecast an earthquake in the hours before it hits, may be feasible under certain circumstances.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the researchers believe they can improve both the accuracy and the lead-time of their forecasts. \u003cbr/\u003eThey believe that both foreshocks and main tremors are caused by an earlier trigger event, perhaps a slow, smooth sliding along the fault line that fails to generate seismic waves.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch an event, called a slow slip transient, may be detectable with the proper instruments, Jordan believes. \u003cbr/\u003eMovement along California's San Andreas fault is monitored by an extensive array of sensors. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we believe is going on is that there is something happening that is slower and more difficult to observe that is actually generating these foreshocks and also triggering the main shock that the foreshocks precede.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Thomas Jordan, Director, Southern California Earthquake Center. \u003cbr/\u003eJordan and his fellow researchers believe an array of sensors on the sea floor of the East Pacific Rise could provide early signs of a major tremor.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have looked for many years for precursors to large earthquakes that will tell us, hey, a big earthquake is about to happen. So far we've seen nothing very diagnostic in places like Indonesia where this very large earthquake occurred, in California where we have earthquakes all the time.
