And these are nocturnal creatures too - and when they go into their foxholes that they may have company, and they may not realise that until it's too late. Soldiers visible though netting around bunker \u003cbr/\u003eCoalition forces in Afghanistan are having to contend with more than the harsh landscape and enemy action: even the local wildlife is heavily armed, hostile, and likely to crawl inside boots or bedding.\u003cbr/\u003eThe arid expanse around Kandahar airbase in southern Afghanistan is also home to an army of lethal snakes, poisonous spiders, scorpions, and other pests.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialist Michael Kubik, from Orchard Park, New York, has the duty of keeping the troops at the airbase safe from hazardous wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a range of dangerous animals here. Poisonous scorpions and camel spiders are common - and while they are usually not fatal, a bite or sting is extremely painful.The base is also home to a variety of huge ants, and a soldier bitten by a swarm could be killed by an allergic reaction. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most dangerous animal in the area is the tiny -- but deadly -- carpet viper. Medics at Kandahar are equipped with anti-venom, but a better solution is not to get bitten.\u003cbr/\u003eKubik explained that the nocturnal animals around the base were a constant threat, and measures had to be taken to keep soldier's tents and equipment free from pests. As the Afghan summer approached, there would be an increasing problem from other wildlife, particularly insects.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some of the tents at the air base have wooden floors, others are equipped only with canvas groundsheets and pests are liable to crawl in.\u003cbr/\u003eSome scorpion bites have been reported at Kandahar since the beginning of the international campaign against the Taliban regime and Al-Qaida terror network, but there have been no cases of snakebite and no fatalities caused by poisonous animals.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
