Mid of man covering flatbread with cloth\u003cbr/\u003eLife is tough for many Afghans who've fled the troubles at home and ended up in countries beyond their borders.\u003cbr/\u003eIn India, refugees and asylum seekers are not only worried about the long-term future of Afghanistan, but also their personal futures and hopes for successful careers.\u003cbr/\u003eLife appears to be at a standstill for thousands of Afghan refugees and asylum seekers who've found themselves in India.\u003cbr/\u003eSharifa Jan fled last year with her six children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban is said to have killed her husband Mohammad Rahim. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was kidnapped as he travelled through Afghanistan's Helmand province. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban demanded a 25,000 US dollar ransom and when Jan couldn't pay, they demanded she turn over her children.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo days later, the Taliban called her to announce that Rahim was dead. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family fled, settling into this two-bedroom rented flat in southern Delhi. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Taliban made their father a martyr, so they posed a danger to my children and myself too,\" says Jan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's me and my daughter and we take pride in our dignity and self-respect. My other children are very small, if the Taliban got a hold of them, the Taliban would have used them (children) to serve their own purposes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe family is cash-strapped.\u003cbr/\u003eThey receive 285 US dollars every three months from the United Nations. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is not even enough to cover their 195 US dollar monthly rent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eldest son quit his job at a travel agency because of long hours and low-pay.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Their (children) lives are secure now. They have been saved from death, but for today and for tomorrow there is nothing for them,\" says Jan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because if today there is no education, no good food and drink, no good living conditions, then what will they become in the future? They won't become anything.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNeighbourhoods such as Lajpat Nagar are filled with Afghans who have turned it into a tiny version of their homeland. \u003cbr/\u003eThere were more than 18,000 Afghan refugees in India as of December 2011, according to the Indian government. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is unclear how many more are unregistered. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, India said it would issue long-term visas and work permits for all legal refugees in the country, coveted documents that would give them access to good jobs and education.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far only refugees from Myanmar and Somalia have received the documents, according to UN officials.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian government officials have declined to comment on the status of Afghan refugees.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout documents, the Afghan community here does little more than just survive.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have no guarantee of admission to public schools. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout work permits, adults are confined to low-paying informal jobs at neighbourhood shops.  \u003cbr/\u003eSharifa Jan's son Shazaib Rahimi, who's 16, says he cannot chase his dreams in India's bustling capital city.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I was in Kabul, we were a bit happy and it was like that. My dream was that I will grow up to be a software engineer.. That was my dream,\" says Rahimi.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So, as we came here, the dream just paused, because I left my studies and everything, so to become a software engineer you have to work very hard.\"\u003cbr/\u003eYoung refugees attend classes at local Catholic education centres which offer language and computer classes among others to help refugees.\u003cbr/\u003eCraft lessons are also laid on for women.\u003cbr/\u003eDelhi Chief of Mission for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), Montserrat Vihe, says without work permits and long-term visas, refugees can't move forward.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We support them with legal aid, we support them in terms of documentation, and to ensure their safety, but when it comes to their life, they need to provide for themselves, which means that they have to find jobs and it is not easy. \u003cbr/\u003eShe is among those attending local education centre classes.\u003cbr/\u003ePublic schools refused her admission because she lacked all the identification papers.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also works part-time at a skin clinic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If I had a visa for work, then I can work as an accountant also, because I have done it, but because we don't have the visa, so they are not giving us proper jobs,\" says Tarzi. \u003cbr/\u003eIndia has historic ties with Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has invested more than two billion US dollars in Afghan infrastructure, including highways and hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003eFor those refugees who've ended up in Delhi, they're trying their best to stay positive - creating pockets of their homeland within their host city.\u003cbr/\u003eThis man is making traditional Afghan flat bread to help keep his fellow nationals happy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut worries over the long term future of Afghanistan will always be on the minds of those who now call
