The \"Boon Ban Fai\" celebrations mark the start of the rice-growing season.The launching of...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThai/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTwo people were burnt, one of them seriously, when a giant rocket exploded as it was  being lit during a festival in north east Thailand. \u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Boon Ban Fai\" celebrations mark the start of the rice-growing season.\u003cbr/\u003eThe launching of the rockets is the focal point of the two day Boon Ban Fai festival. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rockets are homemade and are packed with 120 kilogrammes of gunpowder and  the results can often be dangerously unpredictable.\u003cbr/\u003eThe accident happened away from the launch site. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the men was sitting on a rocket as it was being primed and it's thought a spark  ignited the charge. \u003cbr/\u003eHe suffered severe burns. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother man was also burnt, and they were taken to a nearby clinic, which treats up to  30 people a year during the festival. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year a stray rocket killed a farmer in his field.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is dangerous when the rockets fly too high. We cannot control where it will land. It  will hit someone on the head.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Sanguan Srivises, Public Relations Officer\u003cbr/\u003eBoon Bang Fai - or the \"Bamboo Rocket Festival\" - is one of Thailand's most  spectacular traditions. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's held at Yasothon, 450 miles northeast of Bangkok, and signals the start of the rice- planting season. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rockets are sent up as a reminder to the heavens to send the rains.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year a hundred were fired. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom tip to tail they can measure up to 15 metres which makes getting them into place  on the launch pad an operation in itself. \u003cbr/\u003eIt takes serious application... and a large team of helpers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rockets are made of the plastic ,P-V-C, and have a long bamboo tail. \u003cbr/\u003eThey may be primitive, but the biggest can reach several kilometres into the air and  aircraft are warned to stay clear. \u003cbr/\u003ePrizes are awarded to the best rockets and the winner is the rocket that stays airborne  longest  - the record is two minutes and five seconds.\u003cbr/\u003eWith prize money at stake, there's celebrations by those who think they're ahead, while  the losers come down to earth in more ways than one.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's no secret about the rockets' power - gunpowder which is rammed into the  central cavity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe builders recite their capabilities with pride.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Thai )\u003cbr/\u003e\"Making a rocket can take you weeks.
