Once a suspect is not...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMichael Mawanda, a 38-year-old Ugandan doctor who was infected with Ebola while working in Sierra Leone, said on Tuesday that the failure to identify an Ebola patient in affected countries can be \"catastrophic\". \u003cbr/\u003eOnce a suspect is not identified, \"that case will infect health workers in the hospital, could even infect other patients,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMawanda, who had lived and worked in Sierra Leone since 2011, is one of many Ugandan doctors who were deployed on the Ebola front lines as local authorities sought the expertise of health workers from countries that had experienced Ebola before.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter finding out about the infection, Mawanda was airlifted to Germany for treatment in September.\u003cbr/\u003eMawanda said the Ebola virus shows symptoms of common infections such as Malaria, Typhoid fever and common cold, making it even more difficult for health worker to differentiate an Ebola suspect from a case of a common disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe current Ebola outbreak, which started in Guinea about a year ago, is now spreading particularly fast in Sierra Leone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country now registers an estimated 500 new Ebola infections each week, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which says the outbreak may be slowing down in Liberia and Guinea. \u003cbr/\u003eThe outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is now the worst in history, having infected more than 17,000 people and killed more than 6,000, including some health workers. \u003cbr/\u003eUganda has seen multiple outbreaks of Ebola over the years, including the first outbreak in 2000 that killed more than 200 people.\u003cbr/\u003eKampala - 2 December 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1. That can be catastrophic. Because Ebola has the common symptoms: fever, abdominal pain, vomiting. Now these are symptoms of common infections. Malaria, Typhoid fever, common cold, all these can give you Ebola-like symptoms, and so it is a challenge for a health worker to tease out, is this an Ebola suspect or it is the common diseases that we see?
