The first characteristic it has is that is starts off from a poetic basis. Second, it brings together various disciplines. So it is not just the poetic written word, but the word in practice. Word and action. That's the second thing. The third thing is that it is an open project - architects, poets, sculptors, industrial and graphic designers - so it's a venture shared by many.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9. It's absolutely unique. It's a unique creation and it is a very old creation now. You could say it's avant garde, it's true. Its a kind of permanent avant garde because it's forty years old now I think, or more. The fact that it's forty years old is extraordinary, but it also speaks to the question of the life of the place. The place has its own life, it's not just a little thing you do and then it's over. It's an ongoing project that is remaking itself.\"\u003cbr/\u003e13. Various of modern chapel\u003cbr/\u003eAn architectural experiment is underway on a remote beach in Chile.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the Open City - a space built by a group architects, poets, philosophers and even mathematicians who dreamed of creating their own Utopia, far from the madding crowd.\u003cbr/\u003eSet in sand dunes, there's a series of architecturally unusual  buildings built by students and teachers from one of Chile�s most prestigious schools of design.\u003cbr/\u003eEach building is an experimental project, entirely original, which would not be given planning permission outside the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe site covers some 270 hectares.\u003cbr/\u003eThe buildings designers say they're the result of combining poetry, philosophy and mathematics in architecture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project was founded in 1970 by a group of poets, philosophers, architects and designers. And today, some of them still live on the grounds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Dean of the School of Architecture emphasises the poetic philosophy of Open City.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the practical side, university students come here to learn about alternative ways of constructing and imagining cities.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on the site is a cemetery where the community's dead are buried.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of outside meeting spaces evoke Roman amphitheatres - this is where those who live here gather to discuss community affairs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Open City was inspired by a poem written in 1965 called Amereida. \u003cbr/\u003eThe poem spoke of a Latin American identity which did not resort to exterior influences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project is part of one of the most prestigious schools of architecture in the country, and students and academics from around the world come to visit, study and participate in work here.\u003cbr/\u003eMark West, a Canadian architect, has come here especially to take part in building a new house on the grounds. \u003cbr/\u003eSome might call it a flight of artistic fantasy - for others it's the best example of art for art's
