Nikolic won...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThere were mixed reactions in Belgrade on Monday as Tomislav Nikolic, a pro-Russian ultranationalist and former ally of late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic, beat incumbent Boris Tadic for Serbia's presidency on Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003eNikolic won the Serbian presidency, a result that adds to the political turmoil in the Balkan country and could slow down its attempts to join the European Union.\u003cbr/\u003eNikolic must name a prime minister, but that task has been complicated because of the outcome of the May 6 parliamentary election. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Nikolic's Progressive Party won the most seats, Tadic's Democrats have tentatively agreed on an alliance with Socialists that would give them a majority.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mitrovica, Kosovo, ethnic Serbs were happy that Nikolic won the election, as its northern part is considered a stronghold of Nikolic's party and many fear the ethnic division there will become even more evident. \u003cbr/\u003eSunday's vote is likely to further strain relations and add more difficulties to an already EU-mediated dialogue. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It will be tougher now,\" said Ilir Deda of KIPRED think tank. \"It will be a lot more complicated, but at the same time we all need well designed processes. We are, both Serbia and Kosovo, part of that design as we can end open questions as soon as possible.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKosovo and Serbia have reached a string of agreements to free travel for citizens on both sides and for goods to flow through a contested northern border. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, the deals have seen little success mainly because minority Serbs in Kosovo's north refuse to work with Pristina's ethnic Albanians and consider the deal to be a recognition of Kosovo's independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe outcome of Sunday's vote was a sign of the fading allure of the EU, which is plagued by a debt crisis, and voter discontent with Serbia's weak economy.\u003cbr/\u003eTadic, who championed Serbia's bid to become an EU member, was leading the pre-runoff polls, but Nikolic's nationalist supporters appeared to have more enthusiasm for casting their ballots. \u003cbr/\u003eElection observers said turnout was about 10 percent lower than in 2008, when Tadic beat Nikolic by a slight margin.\u003cbr/\u003eTadic built his presidential bid around pro-Western policies, but his biggest problem was the economic downturn and corruption within the ruling elite. \u003cbr/\u003eFaced with the financial crisis in Europe and beyond, which slowed down much-needed foreign investment, Tadic's government has seen massive job losses and plummeting living standards.\u003cbr/\u003eNikolic's populism struck a chord with voters, who warmed to his criticism of widespread social injustice and corruption in Serbia and promises of jobs, financial security and billions of dollars in foreign investment.\u003cbr/\u003eTadic took a more conciliatory stance toward Serbia's neighbours and war foes in the 1990s, including Kosovo, the former province that nationalists consider the cradle of Serbia's state and religion. \u003cbr/\u003eNikolic has said he would abandon the EU plan if it means that Serbia must give up its claim to Kosovo, and he has forged an alliance with the staunchly anti-EU party of former premier Vojislav Kostunica. \u003cbr/\u003eBelgrade, Serbia \u003cbr/\u003e1.
