It is very, very expensive. It's three\u003cbr/\u003etimes the price in Denmark for example. But that doesn't keep people away from  alcohol. They still drink a very large amount of alcohol.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Peter Ibsen, Counsellor, Qaqiffik/Frederiksburg Centre\u003cbr/\u003eNo one knows exactly why there is so much alcoholism in Greenland.\u003cbr/\u003eSome blame the cold climate or the long dark winter days when there is precious little  else to do.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers say it is because Greenlanders don't have a history of drinking alcohol and they  can't handle it.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Ibsen feels it may be associated with boredom, maybe because of the harsh  climate, but more likely due to unemployment.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think it's culturally related. But of course there is a lot of     unemployment here  too and if people have nothing to do they start\u003cbr/\u003emaybe drinking or using drugs.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Peter Ibsen, Counsellor, Qaqiffik/Frederiksburg\u003cbr/\u003eCentre\u003cbr/\u003eThe modernity and wealth Greenland possesses today is largely artificial, based on  subsidies from Denmark which are now 60 percent of the economy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut not everybody is prospering under the modernised economy.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a suburb of Nuuk, a group of men play football on a crisp summer evening.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat makes this game different from any other is that these men are all convicted  felons -- and serving time in prison.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenland has only one percent the population of Denmark, but nearly ten times the  homicide rate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country has only one prison, and after being convicted its inmates must spend a  minimum of four weeks within the prison walls.\u003cbr/\u003eThen after one month, even if they are convicted murderers or rapists, the inmates are  allowed to leave the prison at certain times unescorted.\u003cbr/\u003eSome take part in a game of football while other can even take a gun and go hunting.\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps not surprisingly, the prisoners are all for it.\u003cbr/\u003eThey, like supporters of the system, say that it helps reintegrate criminals back into  society immediately.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Danish)\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a good system because they try to get people back into society right\u003cbr/\u003eaway. When somebody is convicted they get a job and when they finish their sentence  they are able to go back into society.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mathis, prisoner at the Asylum for the Convicted \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough many prison guards admit the system doesn't work. \u003cbr/\u003eJust three weeks ago (from the end of July) one of the convicts never returned from his  leave, went to his hometown, killed his girlfriend and committed suicide.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after this game the men drive back to the prison -- they even stopped for some beer  on the way -- and check themselves safely back in. \u003cbr/\u003eGeography has made Greenland a very unique place with it's own rules.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it's the world's largest island, it's 55-thousand people live in little towns and  settlements sometimes hundreds of kilometres from one another and reachable only by  boat or plane.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd like their northern neighbours in Lapland, the Greenlanders have mixed tradition  with modern culture.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Nuuk the MTV generation has arrived -- young people wear the latest fashions and  dance to the sounds rap, funk and hip-hop.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this party Nuuk teenagers show off their dancing skills and then enjoy a concert by  those kings of Greenlandic rap -- Nuuk Posse.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenlandic culture is surviving by accepting and integrating Western\u003cbr/\u003eculture.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that doesn't mean the old ways are dying out.\u003cbr/\u003eNuuk has a new cultural centre and this Arctic folk dance festival is well-attended, by  both young and old.\u003cbr/\u003eDancers from all over Greenland as well as Canada, Alaska and Scandinavia  participated, showing off their colourful costumes and dancing. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenland is trying hard to develop it's economy to reduce dependency on Denmark.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Greenlanders believe that their country is like no other, and despite it's problems,  has to do things it's own way.\u003cbr/\u003eQaqortoq, Ilulissat, Nuuk, Greenland, July 17-20, 1997\u003cbr/\u003eQaqortoq, Greenland, July 17, 1997\u003cbr/\u003e1.
