When he returned from an exchange student program in January, the five-foot-nine McCullum looked like this-----rail thin at just 97 pounds.  \u003cbr/\u003eThese photos were taken during his two-week stay at a hospital.  McCullum says he lost nearly 60 pounds after he was denied sufficient food while staying with his host family.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Egyptian host family calls McCullum's story a lie.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the non profit group---that sponsors the exchange program- is coming to the family's defense.....\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:Margaret Crotty//President of AFS Intercultural Programs]\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:SOT: well AFS has been doing this for sixty years--and we make sure we screen our families very carefully.]\u003cbr/\u003eA-F-S has provided The Associated Press with these photos---which show McCullum ...thin but seemingly healthy and happy. \u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:Margaret Crotty//President of AFS Intercultural Programs]\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:SOT: we've built and exchange program for students based on care and trust and always in every single case for sixty years---the care of each student always has been and always be the care and well being of each individual student.]\u003cbr/\u003eIn this case ---- McCullum's Egyptian host family were Coptic Christians--- a religion with strict dietary constrictions. But AFS says----McCullum wasn't subjected to any food restrictions----and that the host family went out of their way to prepare a special diet for their guest. \u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:SOT: we knew about these restrictions before hand--and John did not have to participate with them --and he was given appropriate food.]\u003cbr/\u003eMcCullum disputes that claim---saying his breakfast was usually a small piece of bread with cucumbers and cheese, which he would take to school for lunch.   The teenager says he once stole food because he was so hungry. \u003cbr/\u003eIn January a teacher sent an email to McCullum's parents in Maine saying he was in bad shape and needed to go home.  A-F-S Intercultural Programs--arranged to fly him home.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then---McCullum has regained 20 pounds and looked like this last week.  He plans to return to school in the fall.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat exactly happened *still* isn't clear--but the McCullums are considering a lawsuit----as A-F-S continues to investigate the incident.
