Six major cracks in the tower have worried conservationists that it might not withstand an earthquake.\u003cbr/\u003eVia a computer, the sensors in Jerusalem send real-time data to Italy, where it is analysed by University of Padua experts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe same monitoring system is in place at two landmarks in Verona - the Arena - a Roman-era amphitheatre - and the Scaliger Tombs, a complex of funerary graves built in the Middle Ages for members of the Scaliger ruling family.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe seismic sensors will help researchers to determine structural weaknesses in the ancient buildings and what kind of earthquake-proofing they might need. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is to understand detailed features and structural behaviour of a building in order to plan possible restoration work and the most suitable way to carry them out, says Professor Claudio Modena, the project coordinator and an engineer at the University of Padua:\u003cbr/\u003e\"With this project we are trying to use this specific technology, which is called 'structural health monitoring', to combine aspects of structural safety and conservation. The problem is to minimise the intervention to ensure safety and to do that we have to know as much as possible which are the real structural behaviour, the real characteristic of the structure, of historic construction(s).\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Arena of Verona, the sensors have been installed in two places: on the remains of the Arena's external perimeter that once encircled the amphitheatre and at vaults where cracks have already occurred. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the other side of the city, sensors have been placed at Cansignorio's Tomb, a gothic-style funerary monument erected for the death of Cansignorio della Scala, a ruler of Verona in the 1300's. \u003cbr/\u003eAs Modena explains the sensors are very powerful and very precise:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are measuring everything that is happening, here and in Jerusalem. We can measure very, very low intensity effects of vibrations, movements due to wind, temperature or to even vibration due to the traffic, for example, that can be dangerous also; not immediately, but it increases damage in the structure.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSensors have also been installed at bell towers in Venice and locations in L'Aquila, where the 2009 earthquake left 380 people dead and wreaked havoc on cultural heritage buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly is one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world and has been hit by deadly tremors innumerable times.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Jerusalem Modena says initial assessments for the Tower of David are good. The tower seems to be capable of withstanding an earthquake, because its ancient foundations sit on bedrock. \u003cbr/\u003eThree steel rings that hug the cracked minaret, installed during British rule in the city, have helped save it from collapse. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael and the Palestinian Territories sit along the friction point of the African and Arabian tectonic plates, and the area is prone to small tremors. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout once every 100 years, a large earthquake rattles the region, often damaging key historical sites. The last major quake occurred in 1927.\u003cbr/\u003eThe monitoring technology is also in place in the famous Qutab Minar monument in New Delhi and at minarets in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
