But this time was different for the two Oscar winners.
Sunday morning in Los Angeles, the actresses banded together with other celebrities to raise funds to battle, and to raise awareness of, a disease that has struck extremely close to home: ALS.
Noted Zellweger, "We started Team Nanci in honor of one of my best friends, Nanci Ryder, who was recently diagnosed with bulbar motor neuron disease."
Bulbar onset motor neuron disease is better known as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and Lou Gehrig's disease, a progressive neurological illness that is always fatal.
Ryder, 62, is a veteran Hollywood publicist who, over summer, revealed she was diagnosed with ALS. Sunday marked the 12th ALS Association Golden West Chapter Walk to Defeat ALS, with Team Nanci including not only big-name celebrities, but also Ryder's colleagues from not only her own company, BWR, but others representing virtually every major publicity firm in Los Angeles.
Over the last 40 years, they've all likely worked with Ryder at one point or another.
"She has just worked with everybody from Michael J. Fox to Courteney Cox to Leonardo DiCaprio to Renee Zellweger to myself," Witherspoon said. "And she is the first person you call when you have a movie premiere of a move coming out, but also when there's any kind of thing going on in our lives -- whether we're getting married or having a baby, she sort of works with media to represent us and make sure we get the right magazine covers and make sure we're out of the tabloids (laughs) So she becomes best friends with all of us. She just has a tremendous spirit and been. you know it's just been devastating to see her diagnosed with this disease and it actually put a face on it for me, because, with all of the attention with ice-bucket challenge this summer, I still didn't know anyone with ALS. And when I discovered that Nanci has it and we talked, it made me understand that very little action can be taken. There are so few medicines that are known to help symptoms. And we just had to get busy, to help Nanci, and help everybody who is dealing with this horrible disease."
Ryder's diagnosis has also resulted in an education for Zellweger, who is now extremely well versed in ALS. "This disease was diagnosed in 1869 and they have made so little progress towards finding a cure -- until now and this last 10-year period of time," Zellweger noted. "They've been gathering so much momentum in focusing the research. One doctor said, at this point, it's like telling you that you have cancer, 'But we don't know what kind.' So nobody knows what to treat or where to treat. So they don't know how to treat. And the research now, because of advances in science and technology and obviously medicine, they're able to focus that research through all the projects that organizations like ALSA and and Project ALS are funding."
Late Sunday afternoon, an ALS Association Golden West Chapter spokesperson said some $675,000 was raised by Sunday's event, but the charity was still taking in and counting additional contributions.
