Himalayan kingdom of Nepal are now calling for the disbandment of the throne.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say the beginnings of the erosion of the Nepalese monarchy can be traced back to the time of the massacre itself. \u003cbr/\u003eFormer King Birendra and his queen, Aishwarya, had been attending a royal dinner at the Narayanhity Royal Palace on the evening of 2 June, 2001 when Crown Prince Dipendra grabbed a machine gun and turned it upon his family. \u003cbr/\u003eInvestigations later revealed the prince to have had alcohol and drugs in his system.\u003cbr/\u003eDipendra, who turned a gun on himself after the killings, was briefly declared king before dying of his wounds at a hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eBirendra's brother, Gyanendra, who had been away from the palace during the attack, subsequently took the throne. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor S D Muni from India's Jawaharlal Nehru University said there was no satisfactory probe into the royal massacre and yet Gyanendra stood to gain everything from the act, causing ordinary people to lose faith.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Nepalese were never at ease with the present King, whose actions have further widened the rift between the ruler and the ruled. \u003cbr/\u003eHistorically, the royal family was revered in Nepal, with some people believing the king was the reincarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.\u003cbr/\u003eGyanendra's dismissal of Parliament and sacking of the Prime Minister last year proved to be the last straw for many Nepalese. \u003cbr/\u003eNepal's current government took over after Gyanendra was forced out of office by weeks of protests, organised largely by rebel-backed politicians\u003cbr/\u003ewho are now in power. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has already stripped the King of some powers and it is a matter of time before his fate is decided by the people.  \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Muni says looking at the strong swell of discontent, it would be a surprise if he continued even as a figurehead.  \u003cbr/\u003eWith Nepal determined to forge its way ahead as a republic, focus is also on the communist rebels, the Maoists.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government and rebels agreed during a first round of peace talks last week to observe a 25-point code of conduct that includes refraining from\u003cbr/\u003eprovoking violence, ceasing attacks and ending military recruitment and fundraising.\u003cbr/\u003eReports suggest there are plans to ask the United Nations to monitor a cease-fire while both sides try to negotiate a permanent end to the country's civil
