artillery and mortar attacks, officials said on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting came as the army slowly advanced towards Tamil Tiger rebel strongholds in northern Sri Lanka.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dead Sri Lankan soldiers were given military funerals, among them, Priyantha Indunil, who was buried in Danoowita, about 45 kilometres northeast of Colombo on Sunday. \u003cbr/\u003ePriyantha was killed at the Muhumali battle front on Thursday when Tamil Tigers fired artillery at the base of the army-controlled Jaffna peninsula, spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said.\u003cbr/\u003eRebel official Seevarathnam Puleedevan said six rebel cadres had died in the three days of fighting and 13 others were wounded but he denied that the Tigers' bunkers had been overrun, saying the cadres continued to resist the army.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting came less than a week after the army claimed to have routed Tamil Tigers from Sampur, a rebel-held village in the northeast.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile neither side has withdrawn from a 2002 ceasefire, weeks of escalating battles along borders separating rebel and government-held territory in the northeast have threatened the truce.\u003cbr/\u003eJaffna has long been a flash point for violence in Sri Lanka's 19-year war between the Sinhalese-dominated state and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who claim it as the cultural homeland of the country's 3.2
