Close of image of the 3D landscape house
Architects claim they'll soon be able to build a whole house by simply using a 3D printer.
The technology is still relatively new, but it's already being used in the medical world to create prosthetics, and in industry to bring down the cost of precision parts.
Now designers in the Netherlands are planning to create a complete building.
If it goes ahead as planned this is what the first 3D printed house will look like.
It's being named the Landscape House.
The shape of the proposed building is based on what is called the Mbius strip - an endlessly looped two-story house.
It's the brainchild of Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars who unveiled his concept house at the Material Experience convention, a gathering at which architects can discuss and present ground breaking techniques being used in the profession.
The process of 3D printing has been rapidly adopted across different industries, it's used to create prosthetics, even this replacement ear.
Now Ruijssenaars believes printing technology has come far enough to create the first full size building.
He argues 3D printing is perfectly suited to architecture, particularly his design which includes with sharp curves.
To create his design with traditional construction methods, builders would have to pour concrete into specially constructed timber moulds and these would have to be removed once the concrete had set.
According to Ruijssenaars: "With the 3D printing you can actually print the shape that you want without first having to make the mould. That's why is not only aesthetically an interesting technique, because you have actually density of printing that you can later see in the product, but it's also economically (better) because you save time and energy".
The house will occupy about 1.115 square meters (12,000-square-feet) and if it stays within the projected budget the construction is estimated to cost between $5 and $6 million (USD).
The large printing technology Ruijssenaars will employ is the creation of Enrico Dini.
According to Dini just as 2D printing relies on producing pixels, 3D printing is created by voxels.
Each of Dini's voxels are five millimetres high and resemble small cubes which will influence the texture on the outside of the building.
This is Dini's printer it's big, measuring 5 metres(16 feet) by 3 metres (9 feet), but his company D-Shape is planning manufacture a new giant 3D printer, one that can construct the Landscape House.
Ground rock, or sand is put into the printer and then hardened by a binding agent.
The binder transforms any kind of sand into a marble-like material which has a resistance and traction superior to concrete.
This means there is no need to use iron to reinforce the structure.
Dini says: "Using 3D printing as our start basis of making free form cages and from them move one with the traditional construction technique."
Dini's plan doesn't include printing interiors such as floors, he technique is to create a hollow structure in which will be reinforced with concrete.
The 3D printer will print columns that would go up vertically.
It's not possible to print something that has a horizontal connection, like a beam.
Dini believes putting reinforced concrete within a hollow 3D-printed structure will create a vertical load on top of a horizontal structure which opens the door to all manner of designs.
Ruijssenaars is eager to transform the simple shape of the Mbius strip into the Landscape House.
He says: "Once you put that structure in the situation the entrance of the building goes underneath of the building so all landscape is continues and remains continues like it was before and the building itself is continues in itself. A part of this building beauty is that doesn't have any walls so just has a floor and ceiling and you can completely look trough so from many angles all will you see is a landscape in front and landscape behind the building".
Mathematician and artist Rinus Roelofs helped Janjaap Ruijssenaars refine the Mbius strip-based design over several years.
These are his sculptures built using Dini's D-Shape printer.
They are on view in the university town of Enschede.
The sculptures are particularly suited to a 3D printer because they don't have a beginning, or an end.
Roelofs says: "Most important is that you can make any shape you want. Doesn't matter is how complex shape it is, you can build it. In my experience is that you get lots of extra freedom in thinking about designs when you can use 3D printing."
Janjaap Ruijssenaars is hoping that once completed his revolutionary new structure will be seen by everyone.
He says: "This structure will be best function as a small museum for sculptures.
