(February 14). \u003cbr/\u003eMany flowers sold in Europe ahead of Valentine's day are grown in Ethiopia and now lovers in the this Horn of African nation are beginning to observe the tradition of exchanging flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopia's floriculture sector is blooming, farms are appearing all over the countryside covering nearly a thousand hectares of land. (Four years ago it was just 150 hectares.)\u003cbr/\u003eThere are over 40 flower companies like this one in Sebeta, close to the capital Addis Ababa.\u003cbr/\u003eET Highland Flora is Ethiopian-owned, like 40% of the flower companies in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe remaining 60% are owned by foreign investors - the majority of whom are from the Netherlands. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are also Indian, Israeli, Italian and French owned farms. \u003cbr/\u003eMost farms grow roses, carnations and hypericum (shrub with yellow or red flowers).  \u003cbr/\u003eThe country exports up to 80 million stems per month to 40 different countries. \u003cbr/\u003e70% go to The Netherlands with most of the remainder ending up in Germany, the UK and Russia.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's proving to be an important source of employment for local people with roughly 50,000 people working on these flower farms, 70% of whom are women. \u003cbr/\u003eEmebet Tesfaye is the general manager of ET Highland Flora which started its flower business three years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 20 hectare farm grows nine varieties of roses in 23 greenhouses - each greenhouse, covers half a hectare and is home to 35,000 plants. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 400 staff are responsible for the approximately 90-120,000 stems that the company exports everyday.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the flowers end up in The Netherlands, but the company has plans to export to the UK, Russia and Japan in the near future.\u003cbr/\u003eProduction of red roses around this time doubles - with 30,000 red roses being exported every day around two weeks leading up to the Valentine's Day.\u003cbr/\u003eEmebet Tesfaye says that Valentine's Day is the busiest time of the season for the farm, and that in order to meet demand for the popular Valentino species of roses,  they actually begin shipping roses to the markets two weeks in advance. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that even then the farm is still unable to meet the demand.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Ethiopia's flower industry's share of GDP is currently less than 1% - it's proving to be an important source of income. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 2006/2007 fiscal year the country earned $80 million USD. \u003cbr/\u003eBy June 2008, the government estimates this will increase to $166 million USD.  \u003cbr/\u003eTesfaye Biftu, the Special Adviser to the Minister of Trade and Industry, says that floriculture is one of the country's fastest growing industries because it's easy for flower companies to get land for their crops and obtain loans to finance them.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the flowers are not just for export..... modern flower shops are popping up all over the capital Addis Ababa with home-grown roses, carnations and gerbra (large colourful daisy like flowers) being sold. \u003cbr/\u003eMeheret Tadessa manager of the Angels Flower Shop says the market for flowers around Valentine's Day is increasing each year. \u003cbr/\u003eSome modern women in the city are unforgiving when it comes to Valentine's Day. Girls and women expect at least one red rose. (one rose costs around $0.40).\u003cbr/\u003eAdam Simatchew, a 22-year-old stewardess with Ethiopian Airlines, says she would be angry if her boyfriend of two years didn't buy her roses and chocolates.\u003cbr/\u003eHer friend, Danit Mulugeta, who works in a bank, also expects a rose. \u003cbr/\u003e29-year-old food trader Endale Agonafer says that although he does not had a girlfriend
