We are close allies and good friends and the United States, for us, is the most important partner outside of Europe and therefore we have interests to have excellent relations and also not only on the bilateral level but also relations between Europe and the United States are crucial and the trans-Atlantic relationship is crucial and especially after 9/11 we understand the concerns, the anger of our American friends and therefore we committed ourselves, and this was pretty tough, in the war against terror, to go to Afghanistan. We have troops there, we have several thousand troops now in peacekeeping but also in the war against terror. Two-shot\u003cbr/\u003eGerman Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer arrived in Cairo on Friday, as part of continuing German efforts to find a peaceful solution to the standoff between Iraq and the international community. \u003cbr/\u003eHe met with his Egyptian counterpart, Ahmed Maher.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a press conference he repeated that Germany would not take part in military action against Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US has requested NATO help in supplying AWACs early warning flights, some of which are based in Germany and manned by German crews.  On this point Fischer was equivocal, saying that German could provide the flights for \"NATO purposes\" without defining what those purposes were.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has guaranteed that the U.S. military can overfly Germany and use its bases on German soil to support an attack on Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eGermany took up a two-year place on the U.N.
