decades.\u003cbr/\u003eLance Corporal Daniel Smith was convicted of the sex assault the 23-year-old woman, known publicly by her pseudonym \"Nicole\", while she was drunk in the back of a moving van last November.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe was sentenced to 40 years in jail.\u003cbr/\u003eStaff Sergeant Chad Carpentier, Lance Corporal Keith Silkwood and Lance Corporal Dominic Duplantis, who were accused of doing nothing to help the woman, were acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe case has provoked lengthy protests, with feelings running high and strict security measures in force around the court.\u003cbr/\u003eSmith, aged 21, from St. Louis, Missouri, had told the court that \"Nicole\" was a willing partner and that the sex was consensual. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other marines backed up his testimony and denied any wrongdoing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe incident happened at the former US Naval base at Subic Bay after a night of drinking with Smith, the woman said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe marines had just finished a counter terrorism exercise.\u003cbr/\u003eNo other rape case involving US soldiers in the Philippines has reached court, not even during the decades before the last US base closed in 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the Visiting Forces Agreement, which governs the conduct of US troops in the Philippines, the Marines were placed under US custody during the court proceedings but Smith will
