This was rather unprecedented, it's the Princess' turn to have the children this Christmas so I think that was a shock to the Royal Family. On the Monday the Queen decided to write to both the Prince of Wales, obviously her son, and the Princess of Wales separate letters basically indicating her desire for an early divorce.
SUPER CAPTION: Stuart Higgins, Editor, The Sun
Higgins believes Diana's now infamous T-V interview spelled the end of any hopes that divorce could be avoided.
I think the Panorama interview was the crucial aspect that really convinced the Queen that something had to be done and something had to be done quickly. Neither the Prince or the Princess were willing to act, there was a kind of stalemate between them. The Princess certainly didn't want to act because she had an awful lot to lose in terms of her custody and access to the boys and the Prince did not want to be cast as the bad boy by seeking a divorce himself so it was left to the Queen to actually seek the initiative herself and I think probably most people think it was very courageous and the right thing to do. When you consider what the Princess of Wales did with Panorama it was an incredible thing to do. She went behind the back of the whole Palace establishment, behind the Queen, behind the Duke of Edinburgh, behind all the senior courtiers and organised that piece of propaganda herself and the Queen then knew the Princess was capable of orchestrating her own publicity.
SUPER CAPTION: Stuart Higgins, Editor, The Sun
Since the B-B-C television interview, which gained one of the largest British television audiences ever, Diana has stayed in the spotlight.
She's been on high profile visits to New York and Argentina, where she met President Menem.
Commuters questioned in London on Thursday morning appeared resigned about the latest royal revelation.
As far as Charles and that lot go I think the whole lot of them should be strung up and we will be better off with out them.
I think then that particularly unhappy couple, their children must be having bloody awful time of it, excuse me for swearing, but I think they need to sort themselves out.
Royal duties, like V-J Day commemorations in London this summer, forced the couple to put on a public show of unity.
However they fought a war of words in the British press and on the television.
But what are the constitutional implications of a royal divorce?
Some experts believe it'll have little or no impact on the British monarchy.
"The extraordinary thing is that the Queen's letter suggesting that the Prince and Princess of Wales divorce has no constitutional implications at all. We've had a king who was divorced - George the First - and just to make sure he kept his wife Sofia Dorothea in life imprisonment. And I'm sure, at this moment Charles is spying out a particularly damp basement at Sandringham to do just that! We've also had a king who was separated - George the Fourth and Queen Caroline - so there are no constitutional implications at all."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Starkey, Constitutional Expert, LSE (London School of Economics)
The quiet and solemn changing of the guards outside St James' Palace hides the internal turmoil at Prince Charles' London residence.
Following Thursday morning's newspaper reports, his press office released a statement.
In it, Charles said he wants a divorce, but does not wish to remarry.
The retired Bishop of Birmingham, Hugh Montefiore, believes divorce may be for the best for the children and the monarchy.
He also agrees with the Prince's decision not to remarry after a divorce.
"So it's remarriage that's a problem for the Church, not itself divorce because it's sad that many people can't live together when they've married. And it won't affect him being king at all. Indeed, we've had divorced kings in England before - you've only got to think of King Henry the Eighth - or George the First. I mean, there have been divorced kings in England."
SUPER CAPTION: The Right Reverend Hugh Montefiore, Retired Bishop of Birmingham
However, he believes divorce could cast some doubts over the moral suitability of Charles to be King.
"In a certain respect, the King is a role model and therefore it would be sad to see a role model falling well below the Church's standards."
SUPER CAPTION: The Right Reverend Hugh Montefiore, Retired Bishop of Birmingham
Other senior figures in the Anglican faith share Montefiore's view the British monarchy and it's role at the head of the Church will survive a royal divorce.
Divorce lawyers are now debating what sort of divorce settlement Diana might get.
"If she can show that she needs half a (m) million pounds, the capitalized figure would be in the order of 15 (m) million pounds. Now, I personally doubt whether Prince Charles can afford to pay that - he may need a little help from the Queen who I think has helped on other royal divorces."
SUPER CAPTION: Jonathan Walsh, Divorce Solicitor, Stephenson Harwood
Diana has said she wants what is best for her children, although she does not want a divorce.
But now Queen Elizabeth has gone public in backing a divorce, the Princess could find her hand being forced.
London, 21 December 1995 (except where stated)
1.
