The mismanaged waste industry and a culture of neglect among many Costa Ricans have turned the river bed into a rubbish dump. \u003cbr/\u003eCosta Rica's \"green\" credentials have been called into question, said Bernardo Aguilar, Director of the Neotropics Foundation in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe T�rcoles river basin is the most important river tributary in Costa Rica, formed by the meeting of two rivers: Virilla and Grande de San Ramon. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said there is an increase in the amount of waste going into the basin, which is then carried into the Guacalillo beach. The shores of the beach are covered with trash. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficial say tons of waste are deposited into the basin each month, which puts the American crocodiles and other wildlife that live there at risk. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government acknowledges the problem. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This issue of the basin of the T�rcoles River is a top priority,\" said Jose Miguel Zeledon, Director of Water Resources for the Costa Rica Ministry of Environment.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, experts say the damage caused by the trash is irreversible. The rubbish is gathering on the river beds, which affects oxygen levels, and could speed up the desertification or soil erosion process. \u003cbr/\u003eIronically, the T�rcoles is a major tourist attraction.
