Mid of truck loaded with algae driving past Olympic windsurfing sculpture \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental problems are causing concern in the coastal city of Qingdao, which is hosting the Olympic sailing events.\u003cbr/\u003eAn algae bloom has smothered coastal waters and officials have mobilised around 10-thousand workers and one thousand boats to clear the\u003cbr/\u003eblue-green infestation. Up to five thousand square miles (13-thousand square kilometres) of it is blotching the ocean in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eTrucks and crews have been mobilised in the thousands to move the heavy messy vegetation but officials say it could take weeks to clear the algae away and the games are due to begin in just five weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eTo host the Olympic sailing events, the Chinese port city of Qingdao moved a massive boat yard, relocated industries and spent about 850 (m) million US dollars on transport links, parks, pollution controls and coastal green belts.\u003cbr/\u003eA young couple, engaged to be married, came to Qingdao for a pre-honeymoon trip but were surprised to find the normally crowded and picturesque beaches covered in the green algae.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We came for the pretty scenery, to get a taste of the preparations and excitement of the Olympics. So it is pretty disappointing,\" said tourist Wang Weizhong.\u003cbr/\u003eQingdao resident Mr Yang said he'd never seen anything like it but believed it wouldn't get in the way of the games.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't believe it will effect the Olympics. I think Qingdao and the government will figure out a solution,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBlue-green algae blooms when nutrients, sometimes caused by excessive pollution, build up in water.\u003cbr/\u003eChina has had a number of similar outbreaks in recent years, mostly on inland lakes, largely as a result of severe pollution from industrial sources, farm chemicals and domestic sewage. Along the coast, red tides of microscopic algae have forced fishing industry shutdowns in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eThe algae is blooming over 32 percent of the coastal area set aside for the sailing events due to take place from the 9th to the 23rd of August, according to the Xinhua News Agency,\u003cbr/\u003eThe algae alert comes as Beijing and other cities hosting Olympic events are making final preparations for the Games. Organisers announced over the weekend that all 37 venues were now fully functional and sailors from 30 countries have already arrived in Qingdao to begin training.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental problems have posed some of the biggest concerns for organisers of the Beijing Olympics, particularly the dust and filthy air in the Chinese capital, compounded by expected torrid heat and
