Coconet covering slope \u003cbr/\u003eHeavy rains create land slides that leave thousands killed and homeless in the Philippines each year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now eco-friendly nets have been created by one local entrepreneur to prevent erosion and to stop storm devestation.\u003cbr/\u003eHis key ingredient -- coconuts.\u003cbr/\u003eJustino Arboleda has taken one of the most ubiquitous items in the Philippine islands and put it to use for a good cause.\u003cbr/\u003eThe common coconut is being used to produce eco-friendly nets to combat landslides that devastate the islands each year as a result of heavy weather.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005 alone, 66-thousand people in several northern provinces were left displaced by storms -- their homes destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eArboleda, an agricultural engineer, developed the product to combat such devastation.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We experience a lot of rain, we experience a lot of typhoons, and due to that, we have a lot of erosion and mountain collapsing and slopes failing because of very strong rains so we thought of being able to develop a product using coconut fibers to prevent erosion in the country.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Justino Arboleda, CocoNet manufacturer \u003cbr/\u003eSince its development the coconet has been used in many real estate developments in the Philippines. \u003cbr/\u003eThe technology has also been applied in riverbank rehabilitation efforts in Germany, Japan and the US.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also being tapped for slope protection along highway construction projects like this one in the province of Zambales.   \u003cbr/\u003eEngineers familiar with the coconet say it's the  most efficient way to control soil erosion.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the most efficient...\" in the modern construction industry, especially in slope protection. It can prevent soil erosion in the mountains or any construction areas. Beside from being very efficient, it is cheaper than the rest of the materials. And the technology is far better than the rest because we consider this ecological friendly.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Roy Ruiz, Senior Civil Engineer, Obayashi Corporation\u003cbr/\u003eJustino Arboleda weaves the fibers of the coconut shell to make the brown mesh nets. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce the nets are placed on slopes, the coconut fiber absorbs the water from the surface and guides the water down through the strings of the nets, preventing soil erosion.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe coconet also protects seedlings by allowing them to root without washing away.  \u003cbr/\u003eNot only are coconets more eco-friendly than synthetic plastic or metal materials, but they look nicer too.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Bio-engineering construction now is very popular in the world. They want to put back the plants instead of putting concrete on slopes. Its more aesthetically better. But if we try to put back plants on slopes, cocofiber is the best material to aid plants compared to metal mesh or compared to plastic nets.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTIONI: Justino Arboleda, Coconet manufacturer \u003cbr/\u003eArboleda comes from a region in the Philippines where coconut farmers are living below the poverty line.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile doing research, Arboleda discovered that there was a lot of waste left over from coconut farming. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his hometown region of Bicol alone, an estimated 1.8 billion coconut husks are annually being burned or just thrown away.  \u003cbr/\u003eArboleda set out to put the waste to good use and assist the regional coconut farming economy as well.\u003cbr/\u003eA decorticating machine separates the fiber from the coconut.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe fiber is then brought to nearby towns where villagers are being paid to turn the fiber into twines which are then woven into coconut meshes.  \u003cbr/\u003eFelix Murillo along with his wife Lolita can weave 50 meters of the mesh in a day.\u003cbr/\u003eThis earns them about six US dollars a day or enough for them to get by.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Tagolog)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is really a big help to my family, to earn a living.
