We will create a level playing field for all companies willing to submit products for FDA review. We will give Ambassador Tobias (U.S. global Aids co-ordinator) a sound scientific basis for choosing and buying effective AIDS drugs - and most importantly the people that we are seeking to help will get drugs that work and they will get them quickly. We expect that the blister packages that people apply for, that companies apply for, will get approval in two to four weeks. And to give you some proper perspective the fastest expedited procedure before for patent drugs was seven months. For fixed dosed drugs we expect to be able to get expedited approval in 4-8 weeks, and generic drugs have been on average approved over 17 months - so you can see how we are accelerating tremendously the approval process to get these on the market.\"\u003cbr/\u003e3. Mid shot meeting\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. government on Sunday promised to provide lifesaving combination drugs at lower prices to millions of people suffering from AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson told reporters in Geneva where he is attending a World Health Organisation meeting: \"We are going to provide safe, effective, high quality products to fight HIV/AIDS for millions of people in the hardest hit nations. We're going to deliver on the President's promise and help turn the tide on this global epidemic.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration will propose new guidelines next week to ease the approval process for products which combine several expensive treatments already approved individually by the FDA.\u003cbr/\u003eThis will make it easier for patients in developing countries to receive the treatments.\u003cbr/\u003eThis marks a significant change in US policy, which had been in favour of more stringent standards for drugs these \"fixed-dose combinations,\" made by foreign companies which manufacture low-cost generic versions of anti-HIV drugs and combine them into single pills.\u003cbr/\u003eAIDS advocacy groups and some members of the U.S. Congress criticised that policy as a front intended to ensure the sales of more expensive patented drugs, delaying if not blocking lifesaving treatments in regions hit  hardest by the epidemic.\u003cbr/\u003eWHO has signalled which combinations are appropriate for use in its international push to get lower-cost HIV treatments to developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe combination pills eliminate the need for patients to swallow multiple pills in treatment cocktails.\u003cbr/\u003eRandall Tobias, co-ordinator of the Bush administration's activities to combat AIDS called the announcement
