Close up of Balfour Declaration\u003cbr/\u003eA draft of the Balfour Declaration, the 1917 document in which Great Britain expressed support for a Jewish state, sold for 884,000 US dollars (732,000 euros) at Sotheby's in New York on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe identity of the buyer, a collector bidding over the phone, was not disclosed. The price paid today includes the auction house's fees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe draft was written by Leon Simon, an English Zionist leader, at a meeting at London's Imperial Hotel on 17 July 1917. \u003cbr/\u003eThe document is the only known surviving handwritten draft of the declaration, Sotheby's said. \u003cbr/\u003eWritten on hotel stationery, it reads:\u003cbr/\u003e\"HMG (His Majesty's Government) accepts the principle that P (Palestine) should be reconstituted as the Nat(ional) Home of the JP (Jewish people). HMG will use its best efforts to secure the achievement of this object, and will discuss the necessary methods and means with the ZO (Zionist Organisation).\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Balfour Declaration was ultimately issued on 2 November 1917 by British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe drafts and other documents on sale were part of the archive of Zionist leader Leon Simon. \u003cbr/\u003eOther documents included a signed letter from Chaim Weizmann asking his colleagues to review the draft, and further documents concerning the formulation of the Balfour Declaration, and of the British Mandate in Palestine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe documents involved many of the leaders of the Zionist movement that led to the establishment of the state of Israel, including Weizmann, Harry Sacher, Nahum Sokolow, Samuel Tolkowsky, Jacob Ettinger, Albert Hyamson, Israel Abrahams, Horace M. Kallen, Victor Jacobson, Herbert Samuel, Leonard Stein, Leon Simon, and others. \u003cbr/\u003eSir Leon Simon was an English Zionist leader, Hebrew scholar and civil servant, responsible for much of the early Zionist distribution of pamphlets.  \u003cbr/\u003eHis papers document an era of upheaval towards the end of World War One. \u003cbr/\u003eSimon was a key participant in the Zionist effort at this time and his archive offers documentation of that complex course, shedding light on the drafting of the Balfour Declaration of 1917.  \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the documents included in the collection shows Winston Churchill's name as an intended recipient.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concept of Zionism as a political movement to establish a \"home for the Jewish people in Palestine secured under public law,\" was a formulation of the First Zionist Congress organised by Theodor Herzl in Basel in 1897.\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders of the movement in Europe began to promote the idea to their governments, winning some unofficial expressions of sympathy, but the outbreak of World War One shook up the established geopolitical world and gave the Zionists an opportunity to push their views
