Cardinal Barragan talking to reporter\u003cbr/\u003eItalian politicians have vowed to pass legislation quickly clarifying the right to die after a fierce legal battle over a woman in a vegetative state who died after her family cut off her food and water.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday Eluana Englaro's body was taken from the private clinic in Udine, northern Italy where she died to the public mortuary in Udine's public hospital for an autopsy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 38 year old fell into what her doctors called an irreversible vegetative state after a 1992 car accident.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, a memorial shrine was set up for Englaro in front of the clinic. Several protesters and a larger group of media gathered outside the clinic.\u003cbr/\u003eLate last year, Englaro's father won a decade-long high court battle to allow her feeding tube to be removed, saying she had visited a comatose friend in a hospital before her own accident and said she would never want to be kept alive that way.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly does not allow euthanasia and, whilst patients have a right to refuse treatment, there is no law that allows them to give advance directions on their treatment if became incapacitated.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is also no consensus on whether feeding an incapacitated patient would qualify as therapy, which could then be rejected.\u003cbr/\u003eIn line with the 2008 high court ruling, the La Quiete clinic in Udine, where Englaro had been for the past week, cut off her food and water on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eShe died on Monday night, as the senate was discussing a bill put forward by the government and backed by the Vatican which would prohibit food and water from being suspended for patients who depend on them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe senate had been scheduled to vote on the emergency measure on Tuesday morning, but after news of Englaro's death, senators decided to drop the bill and draft more thorough legislation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Englaro's family lawyer, Giuseppe Campeis, said that \"toxicological tests\" would be conducted at the autopsy, but stressed that \"there are no accused people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEnglaro's case bitterly divided Italy, with proponents on both sides of the right-to-die debate staging daily demonstrations outside the Udine clinic and politicians hurling insults against each other.\u003cbr/\u003ePublic opinion was polarised following the news of the Englaro's death, with one Rome resident describing it as an \"assassination\", but others being more conciliatory.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican also mounted a campaign to keep her alive - Pope Benedict XVI spoke out several times in the past week about the dignity of every human life, though he did not cite Englaro directly.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, the Vatican's top health official stressed the church's position on euthanasia.\u003cbr/\u003eQuoting the Bible's fifth commandment which says \"thou shalt not kill\", Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan noted that those who trespassed that commandment would face the
