maker.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Auto Workers union brought members to the U-S capital from a half-dozen states.\u003cbr/\u003eThe union members drove Ford's most popular make in North America, the Ford Explorer, in an effort to get their message across that any safety problems are not with the Explorers, but with the tires put on them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe convoy around the Mall and the Capitol Hill rally came as Ford and Firestone officials were at a Congressional hearing on the tire problems. \u003cbr/\u003eFord last month announced it would replace all 13 (m) million Firestone Wilderness A-T tires on its vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the hearing, the head of the Congressional committee investigating tire safety came under fire for claiming Ford is replacing Firestone tires with other brands that also have serious failure rates.\u003cbr/\u003eLouisiana Republican, Congressman Billy Tauzin, said congressional investigators have analyzed the failure rates of Ford's replacement tires and found some fail more often than the Firestone Wilderness A-T tires recalled last month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe replacement tires are made by Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, General, BF Goodrich and Uniroyal.\u003cbr/\u003eTauzin said one of the replacement tire brands  has a claims rate of 124 per million tires, well in excess of the five claims per million rate that Ford cites in its recall.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response, the chief executive of Ford Jacques Nasser said that if the information is correct then \"we shouldn't be waiting 30 days ...we should be acting in 30 minutes\".\u003cbr/\u003eFord officials previously said they asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the replacement tires and the agency did not raise any safety concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wilderness AT tire has been at the centre of a nearly year long debate over the safety of Firestone tires. \u003cbr/\u003eBridgestone/Firestone Inc.'s voluntary recall of 6.5 (M) million tires last August included the 15-inch version of the Wilderness AT, made at its plant in Decatur, Illinois.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company insisted that other sizes of the tire made at other plants were safe. \u003cbr/\u003eBut last month Ford said it was concerned about safety and announced it would replace all 13 (M) million Wilderness ATs still on its vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wilderness AT has been standard equipment on the Ford Explorer, the world's best-selling sport utility vehicle. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the 203 fatal accidents among the thousands of crashes reported to the highway safety administration in the last year were roll overs of the Explorer that occurred after the tires apparently failed.\u003cbr/\u003eFord insists the problem is the result of flawed tires, but Bridgestone/Firestone says the design of the Explorer is also a factor.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Lampe, chief executive of Bridgestone/Firestone Inc., said Ford's tests were grossly unscientific
