Wide top view of the G-Star exhibition hall \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea is a magnet for the gaming industry, with shops and cafes offering the very latest games with the most sophisticated hardware. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the industry is facing a growing backlash by those who are concerned about the impact its having on society.\u003cbr/\u003eGaming, and more importantly, competitive gaming is more than a hobby in South Korea, it's becoming a way of life.\u003cbr/\u003eMore and more people are getting involved in gaming competitions, from executives to teenagers. \u003cbr/\u003eSports are increasingly being played on screen rather than out in a field.\u003cbr/\u003eMore and more large scale e-sports league competitions and exhibitions like this are being staged to fuel the demands of game lovers.\u003cbr/\u003eEvents like this G-star 2014 exhibition are constantly launching new games and new hardware to play them with.\u003cbr/\u003eNew celebrities are made here, the stars are the most accomplished players on the computer screen, not the cinema screen.\u003cbr/\u003eThis venue alone has attracted more than 200 thousands visitors in just four days. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of companies from around the world are here vying for attention from gamers.\u003cbr/\u003eHere you can try out the latest games such as 'Lineage Eternal', or 'Civilization Online.' \u003cbr/\u003eThere are even live matches where thousand of gaming fans can watch a nail biting finish. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's become so common that some employers now run company game clubs for their employees.\u003cbr/\u003eLee Min-chul an Android application programmer for KIWIPLE regularly attends the gaming club that his company runs.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Ages vary, starting from our deputy department head, chief, general managers, assistant managers like me and clerks,\" said Lee. \"Since we have many people who enjoy playing games, the game club was founded naturally, and it operates very well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korea's rapid adoption of broadband Internet and the availability of online gaming in cyber cafes has spawned a massive export industry.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, there are still many people in South Korea who are concerned about the level of violence used in e-sports and how addictive it is for some gamers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe battle lines have already been drawn.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Korean society has been sharply divided by a government proposal to treat online games such as \"StarCraft\" in the same way as it treated drug and alcohol use, or gambling.\u003cbr/\u003e27-year-old Sung Jeong-gyu a football gaming fan fears the backlash will result in laws which are too punitive.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The problem (of e-sports) is the potential violence and the harmful impression it can make on you. Therefore, if people play e-sports which aren't violent and play them in a (moderate time restricted) way that they can control themselves, they can then play it together with friends in a way that is not harmful and is more fun.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe government has been considering two bills which have won support from parents, religious groups and doctors and rung alarm bells for the internet industry and gaming fans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe laws would limit advertising and impose a one percent tax on the gaming industry's revenue to create a fund to help those who become addicted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe industry is already appealing against a curfew which was passed by the government in 2011, known as \"Online Game Shutdown\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe curfew bans youngsters under the age of  sixteen from gaming between midnight and dawn.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bill got winning support from parents, religious groups and doctors but alarmed the Internet industry and enraged gamers. \u003cbr/\u003eLee Won-hyung, head of the Korean Society for Computer Games, explains: \"Some teenagers become excessively immersed in gaming and cause problems. So, I think some level of restriction is needed, but suggesting other better measures (to combat addiction) in the future will be better than restriction policies,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to recent data from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, a total of 7 percent of South Koreans are addicted to the internet. \u003cbr/\u003eBut among teenagers, it reaches 10.7 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eFor young gamers, e-sports are an enjoyable way to relax. \u003cbr/\u003eJo Back-gyu says \"Because I was busy studying during my middle and high schools, I actually was exposed longer to e-sports than real sports. I get vicarious satisfaction when I watch e-sports matches. I think I watch them more often because I can enjoy them more frequently than the real sports.\"\u003cbr/\u003e Lee Seung-min hopes the image of e-sports can be improved: \"Even though South Korea recently held big e-sports leagues such as the National Games or global tournaments, one thing I feel bad about (with regards to e-sports in South Korea) is that people's perspective toward e-sports still isn't that good.
