Wide zoom in of Joe's oil painting on canvas
42. Pullout of Joe Bravo painting Carmen Miranda portrait
Beautiful works of art on tortillas - not something you see everyday.
But for Los Angeles artist Joe Bravo, the tortilla is merely his canvas.
And his paintings are starting to turn people's heads.
Artist Joe Bravo has been painting on tortillas for eight years - everybody from Marilyn Monroe and Jesus Christ to the Virgin Mary and Mona Lisa.
Some have called it kitsch as opposed to avant-garde, but they've struck a positive note within the Latino community in California.
From his modest home in Highland Park, an area of Los Angeles, Bravo paints on extra large custom-made tortillas ranging from 19 to 25 inches (48 - 63 cm) in diameter.
The tortilla is a powerful symbol of Bravo's culture and heritage.
It has been a staple of the Mexican diet since pre-Columbian days, and for many struggling Mexicans the tortilla stands for survival itself.
Bravo began painting on tortilla when money was tight as a student artist.
He says canvas was too expensive in college, so one day he started painting on tortillas and passed them in as an art project.
The process begins with Bravo drying the tortillas in the sun on a four-foot awning in his backyard.
He then singes the edges over an open flame on his home gas stove to give them textured black markings.
He likes to paint recognisable images and icons from Latino culture.
His works are original and the Mexican community in Los Angeles has embraced them, but Bravo says works like these don't make much money.
There really is no industry for tortilla painters.
To preserve the tortillas, Bravo actually covers them with a thick coat of acrylic.
Without it, they'd crack.
Bravo says the burnt marks on the tortilla make his work difficult at times.
But there are certain aspects to each canvas that any artist must learn to work with, and it's almost if he's collaborating with nature.
Currently, his work is being shown in Los Angeles at the Kolor Graphics Bureau (KGB) studio and gallery.
KGB Owner Juan Rodriguez loves the creativity of Bravo's art, and even bought one of his pieces
He says it's a very unique idea that illustrates the Latino artists who struggle to afford materials and sell their artwork.
Herbert Gonzalez, a Mexican Culture Institute curator says the Mexican community understands the work.
Karla Lopez, a school teacher, agrees, and thinks Bravo has done great things for Mexican Americans.
She says he's taken Chicano art to the next level by pushing similar, traditional themes, but on a new medium.
Jason Moreno a real estate developer bought one for his house.
Moreno says he was in awe when he first went to the showing, and that the cultural combination of the art and free-flowing tequila that often precedes a tour of the exhibition was a unique experience.
Bravo loves seeing people's reactions when they realise what they're actually looking at.
He says people have preconceived notions of what tortilla paintings are, but when they see it they recognise it as an actual art form, which is all he really wants.
James Panazzo is the owner of the contemporary Lawrence Asher Gallery in Los Angeles
Panazzo says in a city of over 8 million people with such diversity, new ideas come up all the time in the art world in LA and they're always a good addition, no matter what they are.
He adds that Bravo's art in particular is something that Southern Californians can easily relate to because it's an important part of the region's culture.
While the tortillas may not be selling like hotcakes, they have made a mark on a bit of Latino culture.
Bravos tortilla paintings range in price from $1,200 to $3,300.00.
'Bravo: The Tortilla Paintings of Joe Bravo' is on display until May 31st at the Kolor Graphics Bureau (KGB) studio and gallery.
Keyword
