This was on June 20th, 1943, it was a Sunday.  Realistically speaking, we had  very little hope, very little hope.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jack Wolf, American Holocaust Survivor\u003cbr/\u003eJack's father begged the Nazis to spare his family because they were Americans, and  shouldn't have been there.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Nazis wouldn't listen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Wolf family wasn't alone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S government later learned that hundreds of Americans were imprisoned in Nazi  concentration camps during World War 2.\u003cbr/\u003eWriter and author Mitchell Bard has spent years researching the subject.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There were hundreds, maybe a few thousand Americans in concentration camps.  There were Americans in every camp -  Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Dachau, the major  camps.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mitchell Bard, Author of \"Forgotten Victims\"\u003cbr/\u003eAfter decades of pressure from a small number of American holocaust survivors, the U- S and Germany came to an agreement in 1995.\u003cbr/\u003eThe German government will compensate living American citizens who were held in  Nazi camps - as long as the US Government hands over all claims by September of  this year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the US Foreign Claims Settlement Commission, who is handling the matter, says it  needs months to validate and document all of the claims before it can hand them over  to Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eSo last month, Attorney General Janet Reno urged American holocaust survivors to  come forward by February 23rd - or lose their chance to be compensated forever.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is no way to truly compensate anyone who lived through these horrors. But if  you are a survivor, please come forward. If you know a survivor, please tell him or her  about the program.  Time is running out.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: US Attorney General Janet Reno\u003cbr/\u003eSince that announcement, the Foreign Claims Commission has been flooded with  thousands of calls - and hundreds of claims.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have to say, its very hard to reach us now, because of the recent publicity the phones  just ring constantly.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER-CAPTION: Commission employee\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, many claimants will be ruled ineligible - because under the agreement  between the US and Germany, those eligible for compensation must meet strict  criteria.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople who became US citizens after the war, or soldiers who were held in prisoner of  war camps will not be compensated.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington lawyer William Marks represents Jack Wolf and numerous other American  survivors of the holocaust.\u003cbr/\u003eMarks says the agreement does not go far enough.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of his clients suffered in ghettos and Nazi prisons -  but not concentration  camps.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of that technicality, they're barred from receiving any payment.\u003cbr/\u003e\" Whether or not you were in this camp, or that camp, or any camp...if you  were in a  ghetto and you were starved and raped and beaten and tortured, and now they're gonna  tell you that you cannot come in because you were not in a camp, per se, I find  unacceptable.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: William Marks, Attorney representing holocaust survivors\u003cbr/\u003eNo one knows how much money successful claimants will receive from Germany - but  lawyers say its probably around 10-thousand-dollars (U-S) for each month they were  held.\u003cbr/\u003eBut William Marks says it's not the money that's most important.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Nobody's gonna get rich from this.
