Mid of gorilla lying down \u003cbr/\u003eThe Schmutzer Primate Centre has been at forefront of primate research in the Indonesian capital Jakarta for the past decade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre's approach to providing a natural environment for its inhabitants is allowing scientists to monitor exciting behavioural characteristics in these most human-like of animals.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the edge of the Indonesian capital, primates have a special place they can call home.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the star attractions at the Schmutzer Primate Centre is the African gorilla.\u003cbr/\u003eThree gorillas were donated to the centre in 2002 by British zoo owner John Aspinall.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three male gorillas reside in the centre. Two of them are 17 years old and the other one is 15 years old. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently no females at the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Schmutzer Primate Centre was built on a 13-hectare artificial forest adjacent to the popular Ragunan zoo. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre was the brainchild of the late Pauline Antoinette Schmutzer, an Indonesian-born Dutch philanthropist who had made the creation of a world-class primate centre in Indonesia her lifetime ambition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction of the centre began in 1998 and it was finally open for the general public in 2002.\u003cbr/\u003eThe centre has more than 100 primates from 19 different species, including iconic orangutans and African gorillas.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claims to be the only primate centre in Southeast Asia that keeps gorillas in its care.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the animals in the centre have been domesticated by their previous owners. Some animals have also been bred in the centre. \u003cbr/\u003eSchmutzer has adopted the concept of \"open zoo\" to give the primates the feel of their natural home and provide them with the rich biodiversity of the tropical forest.\u003cbr/\u003eHead of public relations at Schmutzer Primate Centre Wahyudi Bambang says they hope the primates will feel at home and will behave naturally in their enclosures.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This primate centre is designed to replicate the natural habitat of the primates as closely as possible. It is part of the efforts of the Ragunan Zoo and Schmutzer Primate Centre to bring out the natural instincts of our animals.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOrangutans, arguably Indonesia's most famous protected species, make up the largest number of primates at the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently seven adult orangutans and five baby orangutans in the centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThey occupy Schmutzer's largest enclosure. \u003cbr/\u003eDue to their natural environment, the orangutans have been part of a successful breeding program at the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have also developed critical skills to build nests on trees, something they would have to master to survive in the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eOrangutan keeper Made Sukadana says their famous residents are settling into their new habitats.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Orangutans have a natural instinct to build nests. If they find the nest comfortable, they will go on to make bigger ones.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince there is no female gorilla, the gorillas here have formed a bachelor group as some gorillas would do in the wild. \u003cbr/\u003eEven though gorillas originate from the tropical African region, the Schmutzer gorillas were used to living in the UK and had to adapt to Jakarta's hot weather.\u003cbr/\u003eGorilla keeper Dwi Suprihadi says the gorillas are making good progress in adapting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because these gorillas were born in the UK with its four seasons, they had taken a longer time to adapt to this climate when they first arrived. But after a few years, they can now enjoy their habitat and remain active even when it's hot.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe wide variety of primates and their expansive natural environment at the centre has been an exciting source of research for the local scientific communities, including major universities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Jakarta National University has been working closely with Schmutzer since its opening.\u003cbr/\u003eTeachers and students regularly come to the centre to study various animal behaviours, breeding pattern and the impact of environment on animals, as primate researcher from Jakarta National University Tatang Mitra Setia says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We generally study the behaviours of primates at the centre. We look into their daily behaviours including stressful behaviour, relationship between the mother and offspring and their behaviour towards visitors. These are some of the focus of our studies.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the future, Schmutzer has plans to bring in female gorillas as part of its breeding programs. \u003cbr/\u003eIf it is successful, it will
