Wide of village with girl arriving on a bicycle\u003cbr/\u003eMotivated by poverty and the hope of a better life, residents of Tekani, a village of about 1,800 inhabitants in far northwestern Bangladesh, have for years been migrating south to the capital Dhaka. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, as news broke of neighbours and relatives killed and maimed in the Tazreen factory fire in November last year, and the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building in April, villagers are now wondering if the risks of moving to the big city are not greater than the benefits of better wages.\u003cbr/\u003eMany question whether a job in the country's garment industry - worth 20 billion US dollars and now the world's third largest - is worth giving up a safe, if impoverished, rural existence for.\u003cbr/\u003eMosammat Almuna Begum once dreamed of sending her 21-year-old daughter to work in the factories. No longer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"See, here we don't have enough rice for a meal and may have to starve until the next meal. But despite the difficulties, I will never go there (to the factory). It's better not to go,\" Begum said. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the hour before the factories open for the day in Ashulia, an industrial suburb just outside Dhaka, the streets are filled with garment workers heading to the factories. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are part of an army of workers 3.6 million strong, more than 80 percent of them women, who churn out millions of pieces of clothing each year, destined for shops from London to Los Angeles.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a densely populated nation of 160 million, workers are willing to toil for a minimum wage equivalent to just 38 US dollars a month.\u003cbr/\u003eLike most of her co-workers, 22-year-old garment worker Mosammat Angura Begum rents a barren concrete room in Ashulia where she lives with her husband.\u003cbr/\u003eBangladesh's garment boom has not come without its price and the industry has long faced accusations of worker exploitation, abuse and a disregard for basic safety.\u003cbr/\u003eAngura has also learned there is no such thing as easy money. \u003cbr/\u003eRather than the riches she and her husband dreamed of three years ago when they moved to Ashulia from Tekani, they have found themselves struggling to get by.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the garment workers who leave Tekani, the homesickness is constant.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Definitely, I like living in the village. It's nice up there in the village . You have all the neighbours and relatives by your side there. Even if you starve there, you feel at peace in your heart just by talking to them. You don't go to the neighbours asking for food - not at all. But you can always go to their houses when you feel like talking to someone,\" says Angura .\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the Tazreen fire last November, workers were locked inside the factory as it burned down, killing 112. \u003cbr/\u003eThen, five months later, cracks were discovered in the Rana Plaza building in April, and yet managers still ordered workers to report for their regular morning shift.\u003cbr/\u003eAn hour later the building, which had several illegal floors and was not built to hold factories, collapsed, killing 1,129.\u003cbr/\u003eMosammat Samira Khatun is angry at the toll the garment industry has taken on her village and her family.\u003cbr/\u003eHer oldest sister, Rabeya Begum Laisu, went to work in garment manufacturing two years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the Tazreen fire killed a neighbour, her family urged her to come home. \u003cbr/\u003eShe told them not to worry, that she would soon visit, eventually promising to quit at the end of April and return to Tekani for at least a month.\u003cbr/\u003eDays later, the building collapsed on top of her. She was 28.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If people die going to work in garment factories and if they never come back, then why would parents like us let our children go to these factories?\" said Khideja Begum, her mother.\u003cbr/\u003eSamira, who is second in her class in school, plans to become a doctor and help those who can't afford proper care.\u003cbr/\u003eShe and her friends at school often talk of their hopes and dreams and they want more than the women they have seen leaving to work in garment factories every year.\u003cbr/\u003eShe knows what Laisu would want that for her.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My sister Laisu died in the building collapse at Rana Plaza. She used to tell me to pay attention to my studies so that I can get good results and can get a good job,\" Samira said.\u003cbr/\u003eKhideja said the family is determined to help Samira realise her
