Wide shot 'Las Ventas bullring'\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival of San Fermin will get underway in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona this week. \u003cbr/\u003eBut elsewhere is Spain the country's famous bull fights are under threat as the rising cost of foodstuffs makes the business of rearing bulls less profitable. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fate of these bulls is certain. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are destined to end up killed in a bullring, as part of Spain's most famous spectacle... the bull fight. \u003cbr/\u003eCarmen Sevilla livestock farm is located just 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Madrid, in the heart of Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eThe animals reared here will face matadors in the capital's famed 'Las Ventas' bullring. \u003cbr/\u003eFarm manager, Antonio Leiro, says that the work is hard and no longer valued as it was in the past. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says that he gets great satisifaction taking care of the bulls and preparing them for their destiny ... to die in the ring. \u003cbr/\u003eBut business is not good. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the farms receive grants from the Spanish government,as well as subsidies from the European Union, Felipe Garcia Gamella, co-owner of the Carmen Sevilla farm, says that only the large breeding farms make a profit. \u003cbr/\u003eGamella says that more government support is needed to help breeders. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that bullfighters, despite being well paid, do not earn enough, considering the risks they take. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever the reality for the majority of bullfighters is different. \u003cbr/\u003eFrascuelo, a veteran bullfighter who is still working despite sixty years old, says that whilst he can earn a living, unless you are booked to appear at the major bullfighting events, the wages are low. \u003cbr/\u003eFrascuelo has fought in modest bull rings of villages, and some of the country's most famous venues, like the Las Ventas bull ring in Madrid or La Maestranza bull ring in Seville. \u003cbr/\u003eBullfighting is not for everyone, even in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003ePolls show that few Spaniards go to the ring regularly.  And bullfighting impresarios are keenly aware that the crowds are short on young people. Fans tend to be middle-aged or older. \u003cbr/\u003ePromoters report 65 million people went to bullfights in Spain in 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eJavier Moreno, spokesperson for Animal Equality, an activist group that works for the abolition of bullfighting, says the Spanish bullfighting industry is looking abroad for profits, and young people show little interest in the activity. \u003cbr/\u003eAnimal rights groups denounce bullfighting as cruel, and Barcelona and other cities have declared themselves officially against it, but there is no significant, nationwide movement to ban the tradition.
