Moore said that globalisation was a natural and...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eWorld Trade Organization Director-General Mike Moore came out in defence of economic globalisation on Wednesday at the United Nations Trade and Development conference in Bangkok. \u003cbr/\u003eMoore said that globalisation was a natural and healthy process - and not an artificial policy designed to allow international conglomerates to get rich at the expense of poor nations, as many critics claim.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity was tightened around the complex where Moore was speaking, with Thai police keen to avoid a repeat of Monday's embarrassment where a pie was thrown in the face of the International Monetary Fund chief.\u003cbr/\u003eMoore's group had its annual meeting disrupted by violence protests in Seattle in November, but the Bangkok demonstration organised to protest at Moore's speech on Tuesday passed off peacefully.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UNCTAD meeting in Bangkok has been relatively trouble-free, unlike the violence and looting in Seattle and the raucous demonstrations at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile International Monetary Fund director Michel Camdessus drew a cake in the face on Monday, having burned in effigy on Sunday, W-T-O director general Mike Moore faced less public opposition.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity was tight around the Queen Sirikit Centre with some reports of  threats made against Moore.\u003cbr/\u003eMoore has been a lightning rod for activists insults, due to his organisation's encouragement of free trade.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd on Wednesday, he hit back at critics of that policy.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of energy has been misapplied, in my opinion, recently, to attacking globalisation, a term which covers just about everything.
