country's president and government ministers by using caricatures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe stars of Kenya's new smash hit television show are puppets - but it's the nation's politicians who are providing the punchlines.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many of the (m) millions who tuned into the debut of \"The XYZ Show,\"  it is only slightly more amusing than the everyday antics of politicians themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eThe satirical puppet show was launched on Kenya's Citizen TV Channel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scenes include; Kenya's justice and agriculture ministers taking pot shots at each other in a western-style showdown while the president nods off in his office nearly obscured by the amount of paper work piled up on his desk.\u003cbr/\u003eThe show's creator, Godfrey \"Gado\" Mwampembwa, says he hopes the show's humour will force Kenyans to take a critical look at the officials who plunged the country into weeks of bloody riots last year - and to realise their own role in helping elect them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would like to ask and interrogate Kenyans themselves to look at themselves and in the process smile and enjoy,\" says Gado, whose political cartoons in the independent newspaper Daily Nation have earned him both widespread popularity and the occasional death threat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latex puppet caricatures in XYZ are based on British television show Spitting Image and the French Les Guignols, both cult programmes, whose jokes at the expense of politicians have immortalised their eccentricities and scandals.\u003cbr/\u003eKenyan politics provides plenty of material for the shows director and creator.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is President Mwai Kibaki, whose disputed 2007 re-election sparked riots that claimed over one thousand lives and threatened to destabilise the whole east African region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only media conference he has given since then aimed to put to an end the persistent rumours of a second wife.\u003cbr/\u003eThen there's Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who vociferously complained about his lack of a red carpet and separate toilet when scandals severely strained the cobbled-together coalition government that ended the violence.\u003cbr/\u003eBickering between the president's faction and the prime minister's was so bad Kenyan women announced a one-week sex boycott to try to pressurise the men to speak to each other - something Odinga's wife said she enthusiastically supported.\u003cbr/\u003eThe justice minister recently resigned, saying her attempts to clean up a congested and corrupted court system had been stymied.\u003cbr/\u003eThese were the courts she referred the opposition to when they claimed the presidential election had been rigged.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe agriculture minister is embroiled in a scandal over the sale of the country's strategic grain reserve when Kenya has appealed for help to feed 10 (m) million of its citizens.\u003cbr/\u003eThen there's the finance minister, son of the country's first president, whose April supplementary budget was found to contain an unexplained extra 120 (m) million dollars - something he attributed to a typing error.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was nevertheless passed by Parliament, whose members are among the most highly paid in the world. \u003cbr/\u003eKenya is also still paying off around 700 (m) million dollars in a group of shady contracts known as Anglo-Leasing, including a contract for vastly overpriced secondhand helicopters.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo of those helicopters - one carrying President Kibaki, another carrying chief of police Hussein Ali - recently crash landed after experiencing problems during take off.\u003cbr/\u003eNo subject is off limits, say the show's creators and director, who insist they will stand firm in the face of any official backlash.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are caricatures of the personalities that we want to not just poke fun at, but also highlight some of the things that they do, good and bad, and use that to educate and also create some positive thoughts in the eyes of the public,\" said James Kanja, XYZ show director.\u003cbr/\u003eKenya generally has a free media but individual journalists writing on controversial subjects have been attacked and even executed in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eXYZ was a hard sell to broadcasters who remembered the censorship under Kibaki's predecessor, says Gado, and the managing director of Citizen promised the show complete editorial freedom.\u003cbr/\u003eAfrican governments are not noted for their senses of humour: the South African Broadcasting Corporation has moth-balled a similar satirical puppet show by political cartoonist Jonathan \"Zapiro\" Shapiro.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth African president Jacob Zuma has lodged two lawsuits against his cartoons already.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Egypt, blogger Abdel Karim Suleiman was imprisoned in 2006 for insulting the president, the same offence that saw Senegalese journalist El Malick Seck jailed last
