But artisans say the technology will never be able to replicate a chef's personal touch.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom a cake in the shape of a snowflake to a ravioli parcel, 3D food printing could become as routine as using a microwave or blender in years to come.\u003cbr/\u003eUp until now, there have only been a handful of 3D food printers on the market, mainly using chocolate or sugar to manufacture sweet goods.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, this new 3D printer - called 'Foodini' - is set to change all that.\u003cbr/\u003eIt uses open capsules which allow culinary whiz-kids to insert their own freshly prepared ingredients into the system.\u003cbr/\u003eIts re-usable capsules are made of stainless steel, meaning they can be easily cleaned and won't retain the flavours and scents of certain ingredients.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's operated through a built-in touch screen, is connected to the internet and can also be controlled through PCs or tablets.\u003cbr/\u003eFood can be printed in many shapes and sizes - from as little as 1.5mm high for crackers or several centimetres for a tartlet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe capsules have nozzles which come in variety of sizes for different kinds of food textures.\u003cbr/\u003ePrinting time depends on the ingredients, the recipe and the complexity of shape.\u003cbr/\u003eA biscuit can take a few minutes, while an intricate chocolate sculpture can take up to 20.\u003cbr/\u003eLynette Kucsma is a co-founder of Natural Machines, which has designed 'Foodini'.\u003cbr/\u003eShe expects 3D food printers to become just another useful kitchen appliance in the future.\u003cbr/\u003e\"3D food printers are not just a fad. We believe it's going to become a common kitchen appliance that you will find in all kitchens, both professionals and home kitchen users, similar to how you see a microwave or an oven in today's kitchen,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The reason why do we believe that is because 3D food printers actually help you to get back to home cooking using fresh ingredients - similar to how a food manufacturer puts food together - 3D food printing is the same concept, except using fresh real food.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNatural Machines still has the first prototype of Foodini.\u003cbr/\u003eOver months and months, a team of technicians led by co-founder Emilio Sepulveda tested different ingredients and textures in the 3D food printer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe co-founder thinks 3D food printing is advancing at an unbelievable pace, but says it may take many years to replicate the technology seen in science fiction movies.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the first version of 3D printing adapted to food. Basically the device takes the ingredients and generates the model,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If we want to go further and create things like we've seen in the movie 'The Fifth Element' or the 'Star Trek' series, that you tell the computer what you want without the need to put in much ingredients, that will still take many years. Nowadays, we have an approach to that with more basic ingredients like flour or water, but we will get there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFoodini will begin limited production in the first quarter of 2015.\u003cbr/\u003eMass production will follow during the second half of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will retail at 1,000 euros ($1,300 USD).\u003cbr/\u003e3D printing is an expanding industry, with many getting excited about the potential of the technology.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at MOB, a technology-themed bar in downtown Barcelona, founder Cecilia Tham says the sky's the limit for this type of 3D printing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe that there's a whole world of potential out there for food printers,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For one thing, can you imagine - for example - that I'm on the phone with you and I say; 'I just made the most amazing pie,' you say; 'Oh, I wanna have one.' You've sent the file via Internet and I start it printing in my house the same pie that you just ate, that you just created.
