Various protest against abortion law++MUTE++\u003cbr/\u003eMexico's politicians on Wednesday brushed aside comments by Pope Benedict XVI in which he said that those who voted to legalise abortion, should no longer be able to receive Communion.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring his flight to Brazil, Benedict was asked about comments by Mexico City church officials that lawmakers would excommunicate themselves if they voted for the legislation legalising abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. \u003cbr/\u003eExcommunication is the church's harshest sanction. In practical terms, it means that the excommunicated person is forbidden from receiving the sacraments and participating in public worship.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in Portuguese Benedict told reporters on Wednesday that the excommunication of Catholic politicians in Mexico City \"was not something arbitrary\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is based simply on the principle that the killing of an innocent human child is incompatible with going in Communion with the body of Christ. Thus, they (the Catholic bishops in Mexico) didn't do anything new or anything surprising,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eReporters took his comments to mean that he endorsed the idea that the lawmakers
