The US government was best with respect to pariah states, that is to say Burma, Belarus, Sierra Leone, Sudan......these are governments that the US had very strong human rights policy towards, but where no competing interests stood in the way\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Kenneth Roth/Executive Director, Human Rights Watch\u003cbr/\u003eThe continuing fight for human rights in Burma has gained support from most of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eMost countries have condemned the regime's constant censuring and imprisonment of the human rights activist  Aung San Suu Kyi, but Burma has little contact commercially and diplomatically with the rest of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Roth said certain areas of the world were simply exempt from U-S pressure on human rights...particularly when economic interests are involved.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of Central Asia and the Middle East simply did not fit into the administration's human rights agenda at all, the reason being, of course, energy, and the significant US energy interests at stake there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Kenneth Roth/Executive Director, Human Rights Watch\u003cbr/\u003eIn the oil-rich Gulf State of Bahrain for instance human rights abuses are said to be high in number and on the increase. \u003cbr/\u003eThe oppression of the Shiite Muslim population by the Sunni government has been well documented and publicised by Amnesty International.\u003cbr/\u003eLucrative trade with Bahrain has stopped many countries, notably the U-S, from objecting to the suppression of these citizens. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report also criticised the U-S for failing to join major international treaties on landmines.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the European Union was not immune to harsh words, either.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the report praised the E-U for conditioning aid and trade preferences on respect for human rights, it also blasted the E-U for applying its policies inconsistently.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it said the group is slow in responding to crises, in particular the one that is still claiming hundreds of lives a year in Algeria.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We also urge the European Union to be careful that its quest for consensus on foreign policy not be used as an obstacle to strong human rights stands on the part of individual European governments.
