You can see the change. These children write in sometimes. We can see we are inducing a change, we need to formally look at it but for sure people remember a visit. I remember the first visit when I went to a museum with my Mum, the first time I saw fish with my Mum. So we see these little ones and maybe one day they're going to be the next marine biologists, the next conservator. Wide visitor looking at fish in tank \u003cbr/\u003eAn aquarium in the UAE is working to conserve some of the area's natural fish stocks. \u003cbr/\u003eAll too often rays and sharks are injured having become tangled in nets. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the Sharjah Aquarium is trying to teach local fishermen about conservation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe one million litre  aquarium - home to 250 marine creatures found in the waters off the coast of the UAE.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, a diver uses an underwater camera to get a close up view of the ray fish as it swims by.\u003cbr/\u003eRays are just one of the types of fish to be found off the coast of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. \u003cbr/\u003eHere at the aquarium all the fish are local  - many of them \"rescue\" fish - brought in by local fishermen who have accidentally entangled them in their nets. \u003cbr/\u003eKerwin Porter, Curator of the Sharjah Aquarium , says they're now trying to teach fishermen new ways of preserving things like rays and sharks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aquarium is an ocean within a museum and it gives people an insight to the treasure in their local waters \u003cbr/\u003eThe marine environment exactly mimics the ecosystems in the waters around the Sharjah coastline.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors can view the fish from an underwater tunnel - viewing galleries take visitors six metres deep for a sample of the UAE marine life.\u003cbr/\u003eEach weekend there are behind-the-scenes guided tours attended by foreign visitors and local residents \u003cbr/\u003eAs Kerwin Porter, curator of the Aquarium points out, seeing the fish helps to encourage people to value and conserve the oceans . \u003cbr/\u003eThe aquarium is developing an ethical collection policy, which aims to take as little as possible from the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eMona Bin Hussain, Trainee Manager For Academic and Adult Learning Programmes, says  \u003cbr/\u003e \"This aquarium is actually built next to a village, a fishing village, where people from Sharjah use to live and work as fishermen and pearl divers for their living. That's why we brought actually so many of the artifacts or historical objects from the actual site, the fishing village, to this aquarium.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe aquarium  reflects the varied landscape of the seabed based on reefs, mangroves, lagoons and even real corals rescued  from areas where development had almost destroyed this most sensitive of habitats.\u003cbr/\u003eThe water comes in to the aquarium from the beach and is cleaned and recirculated. The  basic quality of the sea water is important.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut mimicking the marine environment involves many other elements, including temperature, oxygen and light levels, as well as water quality. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the United Arab Emirates , it is man-made challenges that also menace fish populations. \u003cbr/\u003eRapid urbanisation, the off-shore oil industry and waste from burgeoning tourism all contribute to the threat. \u003cbr/\u003eThe aquarium has a dedicated animal care team who deal with the delicate operation of fish husbandry, and the animals eat everything from prawns and clams to sushi, seaweed and vitamin supplements. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also has a number of employees dedicated to education and who emphasise the traditional link between Sharjah and the sea.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe aquarium also holds weekly workshops for children to learn more about the underwater world. Their parents can also attend. \u003cbr/\u003eDrawing or painting fish adds to the sense of wonder.\u003cbr/\u003eHessa Al Zarouni, Education Executive, School and Family Programmes points out that parents and children share information joining generations in appreciating the wonders of the deep.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough the centuries, people have taken inspiration from marine life for their land-based existence. \u003cbr/\u003eDesigners get ideas for fabrics, wallpaper and even lampshades \u003cbr/\u003eAs Kerwin Porter says the aquarium's achievement is to have turned children into ambassadors for the ocean. \u003cbr/\u003eWith over a quarter of a million visitors since it opened these are encouraging signs that the aquarium's mission to  inspire  the people of Sharjah to
