But, after landing, actually having been somewhat surprised at the fact that we were able to make a successful touchdown, I realized I was going to have to say something. But, it wasn't anything very complicated, when you just think about stepping off. Why, it just seemed to follow.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon\u003cbr/\u003eAldrin became the second man on the moon, following Armstrong by 18 minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eThree decades later, he says planting his foot on the Earth's nearest neighbour was only one of the highlights of the flight.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"It was just a sequence of one rather glorious moment after another, culminating in the successful realization we'd successfully achieved our goal.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Buzz Aldrin, Second Man on the Moon\u003cbr/\u003eThe moon landing marked America's victory in the Cold War space race.\u003cbr/\u003eThe race began in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik One, whose beeps sent shock waves around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAn embarrassed U-S raced to catch up.\u003cbr/\u003eIt prompted President John F. Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time Apollo 11 lifted off in 1969, the U-S had spent 24 (B) billion dollars on space and lost three astronauts in training.\u003cbr/\u003eArmstrong, Aldrin and Michael Collins were chosen to make the journey to the moon.....a dangerous trip that would catapult them into history, but could also cost them their lives.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile they were only three riding in the cramped Apollo 11 capsule,  thousands had worked to put them in flight.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of those behind the scenes was Rocco Petrone.\u003cbr/\u003eHe likened his job as launch director to that of a conductor leading an orchestra.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was up to Petrone to get Apollo 11 off the launch pad, and into orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of strenuous work, the most nail-biting part of the mission was lift-off.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"Those few seconds were always the ones where I was most apprehensive. We had five arms, very large, went about 30 or 40 feet and weighed literally tons. They had to swing out of the way. My eyes were always glued to those, cause if one didn't move, you'd slice the bird. You'd be dead right there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rocco Petrone, Apollo 11 Launch Director\u003cbr/\u003eIt was picture perfect.\u003cbr/\u003eSitting atop the Saturn Five - the biggest launch vehicle ever made -  the astronauts roared into space.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a four day, quarter-million mile journey, Collins circled the moon in the mother ship.\u003cbr/\u003eAldrin and Armstrong sped toward the moon's surface in a lunar lander nicknamed \"Eagle\".\u003cbr/\u003eAs they prepared to touch down, Armstrong realized the computer navigation system was steering them toward a field of boulders.\u003cbr/\u003eHe took the controls, dodged the potentially lethal rocks and set the spindly-legged lander on the Sea of Tranquility with only 15 seconds of fuel left.\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: \"The Eagle has landed.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe man probably watching the lunar module's performance more closely than any other was Tom Kelly.\u003cbr/\u003eKelly is the engineer credited with being the father of the lunar lander.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project consumed his life for eight years.\u003cbr/\u003eKelly had to design a piece of machinery that had hundreds of thousands of parts.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and the other engineers at Grumman Aerospace also had to deal with unprecedented unknowns.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"We had made a lot of guesses and assumptions as to what the lunar surface would be like as it effected the limb. Being an engineer, I was curious to see how close our guesses were to what they found. And, actually we were pretty good.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Tom Kelly, Lunar Module Engineer\u003cbr/\u003eOnce on the moon, Armstrong and Aldrin loped across the pocked surface, enjoying the lightness of their one-sixth gravity.\u003cbr/\u003eThey picked up rocks to take back for study.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Collins circled overhead, planning for a rendezvous that if unsuccessful, could leave his colleagues stranded.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter almost 22 hours on the moon, the three were reunited and headed home for a splash down on Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world has since seen numerous space shuttle flights and the beginnings of construction on an international space station.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Apollo 11 stands out because it gave a nation torn by the Vietnam War a unifying respite.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the men and women who put man on the moon,  it changed their lives forever.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"So there's no question, it has a warm spot in your heart when you conclude that we did it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rocco Petrone, Apollo 11 Launch Director\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"When I look up at the moon, I'm very conscious that there are six lunar module descent stages still up.
