Zoom in from exhibition room to 'Portrait d'Emile Zola' by Paul Cezanne \u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's is auctioning off a long-lost treasure trove of Impressionist and Modern art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection belonged to legendary Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, and has not been seen in public since it was deposited in a Paris bank vault in 1939.\u003cbr/\u003eThis painting hasn't been seen for seventy one years.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time since 1939 the public is able to lay eyes on the Arbres a Collioure by Andre Derain.\u003cbr/\u003eA milestone in the Fauve art movement, the painting marks the high point of Derain's career. \u003cbr/\u003eIt will now be up for auction on June the 22nd, and is expected to sell for between �9 - �14 million ($13- $20 million US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's is auctioning off this long-lost work of art together with 140 other works collected by Ambroise Vollard.\u003cbr/\u003eThe legendary Paris art dealer's collection includes paintings, prints, books and drawings by key avant-garde artists of the late 19th and early 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003eBut where have these items been all this time?\u003cbr/\u003eThey were all locked up in a bank vault at the Soci�t� G�n�rale in Paris after Vollard's death, in 1939.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of Vollard's friends deposited the collection, but Erich Slomovic died soon after at the hand of the Nazis.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, the contents of the vault remained untouched for 40 years.\u003cbr/\u003eHelena Newman, the Vice-chairman of the Impressionist and Modern Art department at Sotheby's, says it is a unique story in the art world. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Well the story behind this collection is one of those extraordinary tales. He fled Paris, he fell under the Nazis, died in 1942 and the collection remained undiscovered and unknown for some 40 years,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was only on the 21st March 1979, that the bank opened the vault. \u003cbr/\u003eThey wanted to sell any contents of value in order to recoup some 40 years of unpaid storage fees. \u003cbr/\u003eWith surprise, the art world rediscovered these rare and exciting works of art.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the highlights is this Cezanne portrait of Emile Zola.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the only surviving portrait of the writer by Cezanne, and bears witness to the legendary friendship between the two men. \u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the treasures in this collection is a small, exquisite portrait of Emile Zola by Paul Cezanne. And so it's not only a document of that time and that friendship, but also a very rare, museum quality work by Cezanne estimated at 500,000 - 700,000 Euros ($605,700 - $847,980)\" says Newman\u003cbr/\u003eVollard's vault turned out to be a real treasure trove, including prints by Picasso, drawings by Renoir and photos by Man Ray.\u003cbr/\u003eAmbroise Vollard (1866-1939) played a crucial role in the Impressionist and Modern Art world.\u003cbr/\u003eSet right at the centre of what was going on in Paris, in the first half of the 20th century, he was hugely influential in the development of the art market and the promotion of the new, younger generation of artists. \u003cbr/\u003eVollard organised important exhibitions of artists including Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso, and promoted all of their careers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe art collector gave Picasso his first exhibition in Paris in 1901 and he was friends of the older generation of painters like Degas, Cezanne and Renoir.\u003cbr/\u003eGeorgina Adam, editor of The Art Newspaper, says the discovery of Vollard's collection is very important.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Oh it's fantastic to have it because Vollard is such an important dealer. You know he was Picasso's first dealer, he gave Picasso his first show, in his own house I think. And he was enormously influential. To find this enormous trove of works is amazing. There's this fantastic painting - the Fauve d'Esterain - which will certainly do extremely well. But, it's not only that. You've got these touching works that you can see around me - the prints that were made from Renoir, Picasso. And so it's really, it's very exciting re-discovery.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA sale, which was scheduled to happen in Paris in March 1981, never took place due to a set of legal challenges.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth the heirs of Vollard and Slomovic claimed the rights to the collection.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dispute was finally resolved and the collection given to Vollard's family.\u003cbr/\u003eSotheby's is now auctioning off the main bulk in Paris on the 29th June.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike all the other items, Derain's Arbres a Collioure is going to be sold on the 22nd of June in London.\u003cbr/\u003eNewman says that international buyers are going to be interested in both sales.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that a collection of this importance is going to attract a whole range of international buyers.
