And the data so far...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eA major project's underway to investigate the plight of tigers in South East Asia.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society (W-C-S) is using\u003cbr/\u003eremote cameras to snap them as they prowl the jungles. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the data so far suggests a growing crisis with far fewer tigers in the region than they thought.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Thai-Cambodia border. \u003cbr/\u003eBeneath the forest canopy a vital mission is in full swing.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralian zoologist Tony Lynam is leading the first real scientific attempt to establish the density and distribution of Thailand's tiger population.\u003cbr/\u003eThe technique is innovative. \u003cbr/\u003eCameras are fixed to trees for a month on likely tiger runs. \u003cbr/\u003eWhenever anything breaks an infra red beam the camera clicks.\u003cbr/\u003eAdd data on the amount of prey, and anecdotal evidence from villagers, and a rapid assessment can be made of how many tigers are there, if any.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't actually have to be there to record their presence, so the camera traps are a non-invasive technique for assessing tigers and it's a great technique because we don't have to catch the tigers, we don't have to disturb them, we don't have to disturb their habitats in order to get the information that we're after.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Tony Lynam, Indochina Tiger Project, Wildlife Conservation Society \u003cbr/\u003eThe results are breathtaking. \u003cbr/\u003eThese tigers were snapped in southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border, earlier this year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the analysis is sobering. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter surveying four extensive Thai jungles, he's only found six individuals.\u003cbr/\u003eThailand is at the centre of the tiger's global range. \u003cbr/\u003eIn theory it should have the densest population.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"From our surveys over the last two years we've found that there are fewer tigers than we'd ever thought out in those forests and that's an alarm bell for us. What it means is that tigers are really on their way out and unless some action is taken to protect tigers in future they may disappear from Thailand.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Tony Lynam, Indochina Tiger Project, Wildlife Conservation Society \u003cbr/\u003eEarly morning at Ta Phaya National Park and the W-C-S team is out already. \u003cbr/\u003eWith them, a platoon of Thai Rangers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe area's rife with bandits and snares let alone wild animals. \u003cbr/\u003eThey've come to collect cameras they put out six weeks ago, in a forty square kilometre block. \u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the films will reveal a tiger.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut far more likely they'll underline a major reason for the tiger's decline - hunters. \u003cbr/\u003eA camera trap took this picture in September. \u003cbr/\u003eHunting is illegal in national parks, but unfortunately it's very common. \u003cbr/\u003eUsually they take smaller species, but not always.\u003cbr/\u003eJust a few kilometres away is a major border point. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd there, at Poipet market in Cambodia, evidence that tigers too are falling before the hunters' traps and guns.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Royal Forest Department is working in collaboration with Tony Lynam. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say the tiger's survival is of prime concern.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The tiger is an indicator of the forest. If we have tigers it means our forests are still rich in bio-diversity, and still virgin.
