More than two million pupils in the city of Gauteng went back to school recently following a call from the local government. Under Mandela's government the plan is to intergate the two communities by having all students follow the same school calendar and curricula for the first time in the history of South Africa. But the government has faced criticism from education bodies over its failure so far to address the question of overcrowding in schools, and the thousands of newly qualified teachers who are unemployed. There are reports in Gauteng, that some principals of allegedly the white conservative Afrikaaners, turned black pupils away, claiming overcrowding at their schools.
