Wide of news conference\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki on Monday welcomed the result of a vote that makes Palestine a full member of the UN cultural body, UNESCO.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The fact that we became members of UNESCO, it's the beginning to really establish new facts on the ground and make people realise that Palestine is there and whatever you will do you cannot really erase Palestine from that map,\" al-Maliki told reporters in Paris after the vote.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highly divisive breakthrough could cost the agency a fifth of its budget. \u003cbr/\u003eMonday's vote is a grand symbolic victory for the Palestinians, but it alone won't make Palestine into a state. \u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of borders of an eventual Palestinian state, security troubles and other disputes that have thwarted Middle East peace for decades remain unresolved. \u003cbr/\u003eHuge cheers went up at an unusually tense and dramatic meeting of UNESCO's General Conference after delegates approved the membership in a vote of 107-14 with 52 abstentions. \u003cbr/\u003eEighty-one votes were needed for approval in a hall with 173 UNESCO member delegations present.\u003cbr/\u003eEven if the vote's impact isn't felt right away in the Mideast, it will be quickly felt at UNESCO.\u003cbr/\u003eAside from the US funding cut threat, Israel's Foreign Ministry said it \"will consider its further ... cooperation with the organisation\" after Monday's vote.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN agency protects historic heritage sites and works to improve world literacy, access to schooling for girls and cultural understanding, but it also has come under criticism in the past as a forum for anti-Israel sentiment.\u003cbr/\u003eIt depends heavily on US funding, but has survived without it in the past: The United States pulled out of UNESCO under President Ronald Reagan, rejoining two decades later under President George W. Bush.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian officials are seeking full membership in the United Nations, but that effort is still under examination and the US has pledged a veto unless there is a peace deal with Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eGiven that, the Palestinians separately sought membership at UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, which is based in Paris. \u003cbr/\u003eAll the efforts are part of a broader push by the Palestinian Authority under Mahmoud Abbas for greater international recognition in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eUNESCO, like other UN agencies, is a part of the world body but has separate membership procedures and can make its own decisions about which countries belong. \u003cbr/\u003eFull UN membership is not required for membership in many of the UN agencies.\u003cbr/\u003eMonday's vote is definitive, and the membership formally takes effect when Palestine signs UNESCO's founding
