(mute)\u003cbr/\u003eSpring has sprung in Japan, but so too has the start of 'kafunsho', or hay fever season.\u003cbr/\u003eAllergies to pollen are on the increase, and despite a growing number of remedies that can be bought off the shelf, the sneezing, wheezing and coughing caused by hay fever is set to cost the country billions of dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eSpring is in the air, but from the look of these people in Tokyo, they aren't happy. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact it's impossible to see many faces because they're shrouded in white masks. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's an attempt to prevent the seasonal hay fever which is costing the Japanese economy millions of dollars in sickness and lost work days. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the main culprit, the beautiful Japanese Cedar tree, as well as the local obsession with with cleanliness. \u003cbr/\u003eMiho Nitta is a housewife with three children. She's suffered from hay fever for over ten years now. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the symptoms are getting worse every year and it's become so severe that she can't go outside the house during the pollen season unless she is fully protected with a mask, gloves, glasses and something to brush off any pollen which clings to her. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the allergy is having a major impact on her life because  she has to keep her trips outside to a minimum, and that affects the children. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Nitta, even hanging out the laundry to dry outside has awful consequences. \u003cbr/\u003eHer nose runs, her eyes become itchy and swell and sometimes she also suffers from a sore throat and coughs. \u003cbr/\u003eThis has been the worst year so far, because the skin around her eyes turned red and swelled up.\u003cbr/\u003eThe family home always has to have an air-conditioner and air cleaner on standby and the windows remain tightly shut until the cedar pollen season is over. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Nitta is one of seventeen million who are debilitated by hay fever every year, that's fifteen per cent of the entire population. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government estimates the total loss to the economy could amount to between three hundred ($2.9 billion USD) and eight-hundred billion yen ($7.9billion USD). \u003cbr/\u003eThis includes revenue lost by shops, the leisure industry and restaurants when people are forced to stay at home, or curtail their trips outside. \u003cbr/\u003eThe drug company GlaxoSmithKline argues this figure should be much higher because the government hasn't taken into account the decline in concentration and efficiency of many white collar workers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nippon Medical School's Doctor Kimihiro Ohkubo says Tokyo is now experiencing the height of the cedar pollen season which runs from February to May. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's the worst possible time of the year. \u003cbr/\u003eFor city workers in the middle of their busiest time, tying up loose ends and ensuring their businesses are in good order in time for the start of the new financial year illness has serious economic consequences. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Ohkubo it's also hard on children because it's the beginning of the new school year. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the hay fever hits both at a time when they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors say the hay fever is caused by a type of glyco-protein in the pollen. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen it enters the body it's recognised as a foreign agent and an immunoglobulin antibody is created. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen the same substance is breathed in again, the body reacts by producing histamine, or leukotriene which causes an inflammatory reaction. There is also concern that this allergy is being exacerbated by Japanese fastidiousness and obsession with cleanliness following an outbreak of the e-coli bacteria which spread across Japan in the early 1990s.\u003cbr/\u003eDepartment stores and pharmacies say they are having to continually increase the shelf space they dedicate to allergy products such as agronomic masks, nose plugs, nasal wash, and aroma goods. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Japanese department store Loft estimates the market is currently worth up to sixty-billion yen ($5.9 billion USD).\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword medical-
